Nice. There's something special about seeing the Prince shield on places when you're looking around your vehicle. I was amused when I found it on the gearbox side of the clutch slave on my 1st Gen.

How right you are! when you have a good look around, the shield pops up in all these weird places.

update so far - although was hopng for pics to go with it, but it turns out it was "only" a head gasket. So, it's headless at the moment. have an event on in 2 weeks i was hoping to drive it to, but not so sure that is happening now

Needless to say i didn't make that event i was hoping to.............

So, as with Princes, nothing is really standard or off the shelf. the head gasket for one, has to be hand made. So, a template was made, and it was lucky we did - a friend offered one of their spares (they too have the G11 engine), but it was several mm difference in many spots)

So, Dale made the template, went away and a few weeks later i got this

Meanwhile, the head was off getting a bit of TLC. Guides, quick valve grind, stem seals etc and it's was done.

Next comes putting it all back together!!! Might not be for a fortnight......

meanwhile my roadster comes back very soon and then comes the fun of putting it back together after several years in a thousand different bits..

well you know the story about the best laid plans, well what a difference 6mm can make................... :evil:

Got all my bits, and the water passage covers that were made by a fellow prince owner, and we gather to get the job done.

Those hand made head gaskets that cost a packet did the job. Dale measure both block and head, so when we put it back together, it literally fit like a glove.

Everything seems to be going back together too easily......

Figured whilst the radiator was out I'd get it re-done....

Another one with Manifold on....

and then we prime the engine to make sure oil is flowing. hmmm.... priming away, hearing the 'gurgle' noise of oil moving up around but won't come through the oil bar.........

Stuck my head under the car to find a good litre + on the floor. prime a little more to feel where its coming from, and it's from the back of the head.

I can safely say, that having one f those little mirrors in your handbag pays off- been in there for a year and this was the first time I used it!

So it turns out the 6mm aluminum dowell normally in the head (a drill hole for the rocker oil feed). You can see the little blighter in the mirror.
The engine man was shocked it had happened, and is now making me a special tap with turn key and a plug to insert back into the opening to seal it. This will be able to be done without removing the head- handy because i have torqued it, and the head gasket will perish if i open it.........

The other fun part i now have is cleaning oil off the back of the engine and gearbox..............

Hopefully will have the part this weekend....

Beautiful automobile. Good luck getting this running again- the parts availablility (or lack thereof) sounds like a nightmare. :shock:

Update...... contrary to come people's belief, there was nowhere near enough room to tap a thread into the hole... which meant out comes the engine and box.

So here's a better photo of the offending hole.

Tap a thread in

And it's all sealed

Primed it up to make sure that oil is going where it should.

Back in it goes,

It's still not running, but we came across a couple of little things we need to fix up - just manifold clamps, gearbox bolts and a new set of base gaskets for the Webers. There's a week until Nationals so will be busy........

So, with bits in hand , an early night was expected.... how wrong we could be.
i made some gaskets up over the weekend for the carbs to air filter backing plate, Steve got my exhaust clamps re-done and the gearbox mount bolts as well.

Things were going relatively well, even the carbs weren't too far out..... (listen to those webers...mmm)

until i noticed a milky run down the side of the head right at the front- and on both sides.

Now i like my car to have water and oil, just preferably not together....

So with time against us, the Prince - like Kev's Hako - will not make it to Nationals. at a guess, the water pump gasket has gone and shat itself, which means getting the front off and having a look.... which when that happens I will replace most bits (timing chain, harmonic seal, belts, etc) so that *fingers crossed* it doesn't happen again.
A good side to this is that I'm taking a fellow Prince owners car up instead. His is far far nicer looking than mine (which wouldn't be hard with an 'ok' one, but Steve's is awesome) so at least there'll be a good example there....

Whilst I took another prince to Nationals (and it took out Best original Vehicle) and co-entered a mate's car for the track day, it is not the same when yours is still sitting on axle stands....

So, we've fixed the leaks etc, pressured the radiator and checked for more leaks, all is just about good.....

It's back together.... but although oil is changed etc, there's likely to be some water remnants in there- in oil lines for example. So, it's a case of do a 30km or so drive, then come back take the cover off and check for water and clean as much of it out as possible. We did this a couple times today, and each time there's far far less 'milk' appearing.

Then, when we're happy with it, I'll dump the oil and filters again and whack some fresh stuff in and torque it up.

On the engine running side, the difference is massive. Its smoother, starts much easier, very responsive, and pulls like a train from down low in 2nd. I am indeed a lot happier......... especially when you hear the triple webers singing their tune. I'm kind of cheating because I have no air filter on (need to make up rubber gaskets) - just trumpets, so it will quieten a little once all that's back on but i ain't complaining..............
