my buddy's dad stuffed a 229 v6 from an 81 monte carlo into a 4 dr chevette once... fun car. kept blowing up rear ends, though. looked almost stock, except for the little chrome air cleaner poking through the hood. 8)

NO need to worry, Taco... with their SHITTY reliability and Daewoo engines, they'll ALL be gone in about half that time. LOL :P

Chevettes were FR, no? Good candidate for a fun car?

Yes, and yes. 8)

Engines were crap though. Either need to get lucky and find the Cosworth Twin-cam Vega engine, or swap in something Japanese. :P

And they are 4x114.3 bolt pattern. Some bolt-on flares and slammed on some deep Watanabes and you might have something... :tu:

With their RWD platform, and endless possibility of V8 swaps by the musclecar crowd... I think of the Chevette as the American version of the Toyota Starlet KP61.

Both cars, make EXCELLENT sleepers. The remaining few, are usually converted to drag cars..... the Chevettes usually with 350 V8s, the Starlets usually with rotary turbos.

Nowadays, I'd take either one... except, the Starlet has great reliability, the Chevette NOT so much. Both are better off, as SWAP projects. :)

**Let's not forget the 1st gen 1977-80 Mazda GLC... another RWD hatchee, that would ALSO make a great sleeper, with a V8 or rotary.

SO many little gadgets and options that made cars unique.
Different interior fabrics, seat options, Trim levels that each had specific characteristics.

Now every damn car has a plastic & rubber interior,
Radios with gaudy knobs, Ugly wheels on 95% of production cars,
No aftermarket optioned items like how it used to be...
Idiot proof clusters with indicator lights instead of functional gauges,
Plastic clad engine bays with covers for everything...

An older man came up to me and was checking out my CVCC and we got to talking about this sort of thing. Cars of yesterday seem to have character all on their own. They were all basically unique. You knew if you saw a Honda or a Datsun or whatever. Now if you drive and see a car from a little way off, you might not know if you're looking at a Hyundai, Honda or Mercedes. Cars are damn near identical.

As long as there's one left, just one. I need a chassis for my RC full-size moving target for the next full-auto shoot.

Odd that we're having this discussion, and what pulls up next to me at a stoplight today? A super cherry Chevette (aka Pontiac T1000). :P

I mean I'd at least wear a disguise but I'm 100% serious.

Galant VR4.

They're rare and already collectible.
Give it 15 years and they're going to be goldmines.

+1
Especially given that in 15 years Mitsubishi will either be gone or unrecognizable given their "new global strategy."

Someone who works at the local Chevrolet showroom daily drives a green Galant VR-4. It is lowered but not slammed on period-correct wheels, possibly enkeis. IMO those cars are cooler than any modern evo or sti. I agree that many of today's cars are of a cookie-cutter, "let's all build cars that look like home appliances" style, but some might really be cool in 20 years. I wouldn't pay to drive a Nissan Cube today, but after they stop making them I'll probably want one. Also, for the right price, I would pick up an early 80s civic in a second, so maybe I'll feel the same way about a Mazda 2 or a Fit in coming years. And who doesn't want to convert a first-generation Xb to rear-wheel drive, and shove a 13b turbo under its tiny hood?

I didn't, until just now when you mentioned it. :D

I think we'll see a lot more homebrew RWD conversions in the coming years, sort of like we're seeing on last-gen Preludes now. RWD cars will always be the enthusiast's choice, but they will be few and far between.

Are we only talking JNCs? Because I wouldn't mine owning one of these, would make a nice sleeper project... you don't see these anymore.
