I knew that.

I just never thought the R30/R31 cars were nice looking until I saw that one.

That blue R30 belongs to my mate Josh, its getting a RB motor now.

RB20DET's seem to have gone out of fashion as RB25 prices have effectively halved in the last couple of years. Hence nobody wants to pay $1500 for an RB20DET package when $2500 or so buys an RB25DET.

As such I haven't found any under about $1200AUD; which would pretty well cover my parts and machining on the current motor. I figure I can have a 20 year old motor with brand new internals versus a 17-19 year old motor with unknown ones.
There are some other advantages to retaining the HR31 RB20DET too rather than getting an R32/A31 RB20DET.

I was bored after lunch today so I pulled the motor and box out.
Will start stripping the motor maybe this week...it sounds really nasty.
However..it almost sounds like it could be a gudgeon pin not a big end knock..guess we'll see.

If its a gudgeon pin, then I guess it will need pistons..toying with Tomei 2.2l forged piston kit but factory Nissan ones also ought to be good enough for another 20 years at 1/4 the price.


However I want to sort out things in roughly this order- new coilovers, big brakes and new diff centre; paint front panel work, fit new front bar, paint one of the rear quarters, panelbeat rear apron and passenger side sill; rebuild and refit motor with a few goodies.
That way theres no temptation to build a banger motor and slot it in while everything else falls apart.

Pulled motor down yesterday..

Findings:
-Number Four big end bearing severely damaged but still most of the shell intact. Crank and rod should be saveable with a regrind and resize, new bearings.

-Piston crowns look great, no pitting or detonation damage

-Cylinder head looks good too

-All other bearings seem fine, minimal metal in oil (and none seems to have reached the top end)

-Bores look good, no lips or gouges and hone marks still clear


So the plan now is to get the bottom end freshened up with new bearings and journals linished/reground. Hone and fit new rings, possibly new set of OEM pistons.
I'm going to go for an N1 oil pump and I'm considering tomei oil feed restrictors in the head and external oil drains. N1 water pump to bring temps down further when undertaking more spirited driving.

Think a set of cams, camgears and valve springs would help the midrange a bit so hoping to go with a Tomei or HKS kit.

Will remove the intake butterflies and clean up the sandwich plate a bit in the lower runners. These motors have a vaccum operated butterfly system very much the same as TVIS.

Hi there, my dad gave me his Paul Newman limited edition 4dr skyline from the early 80's, signature decals on the bonnet and both rear doors, its been sitting in his garage for the past 15yrs will need some work to get it on the road again, now starting to consider it a worth while project lol.
By memory I think its an 82, I'll get more details later today, and I'm not sure how many were made, does anyone??

Still not running, have almost everything ready to slot motor in now though.

A metric arseload of parts is on the way for it. Coilovers, oil cooler, big injectors, afm, remap, intercooler, front bar and vents, 4 pots....heaps and heaps of gear.
Motor should be here this afternoon, hopefully fit it back in on sunday.

My associate Jade came over with his coupe, its about 1000x cleaner than mine; has an old skool HKS turbo kit, bunch of vintage Lamco gauges, 17x8 and 17x9" Wiser rims and genuine GTS-R aero.





So, my motor and box are in, Z32 AFM, GT-R 444cc injectors, Nistune ECU all in. S13 ISC coilovers with 10/8kg springs are in, waiting for my R33 GTS-T 296mm rotors to be redrilled to 4 stud so I can fit the 4 pot brakes.

Then we bleed clutch and brakes, stick a wideband up its clacker and get a base tune. A little later I'll chuck a front mount cooler in and up the boost another 8psi or so to 17-18psi.

My wheels are going to have the centres sprayed black. Trying to organise a fresh Autospoiler front lip and new front bar (have vents to suit).

Thats about where its at. I'm having machinations of selling up and buying something like a UCF20 or Q45 Infiniti, I'm getting kind of sick of it...but that won't happen.

Front panels refinished, fresh headlights, grille, autospoiler lip, vents, bumper skin all acquired and fitted.
Still pretty rough and ready from the windscreen back, haha.







Lots of work still to do; however it is now driveable (though the tune leaves a lot to be desired, and I need to fit my new heater core and mixer actuators to make the climate control work, all will be attended to).

Only got half the arms...I've got the arms, and the outside collar part on one side, but I don't have the piece which actually drives them off the square shoulder on the shafts. I had enough parts to jerry rig it all to test clearances. So thats on the to do list, got Cazz onto it.

As for the rest of the to do list...

Immediately:
-Fit subframe mounts, remove superfluous hicas plumbing
-Fit steering rack mount bushes
-Fit R34 GT-T intercooler; I need one R33/34 pipe to make it fit (the bend off the back of the cooler)
-Bolt front bar to sides of front fenders (its a c**t to get into the intercooler side)
-Timing is way retarded but by how much I don't know
-'slightly used' One piece front/dump pipe I bought off a guy on SAU has an enormous leak so has to be rewelded around the wastegate pipe...*
-Finish rear lips, need cleaning up and touching up, need to fold in the sections behind the side strips as thats where it rubs.
-Section of sill is partially squashed and needs to be pulled out
-Grubby rear valance needs some hammer love and a touch up
-Fit electronic boost control, hook up wideband, wind up to 18psi
-More ECU finetuning.
-Hi-Temp silver paint all OEM heatshields and refit
-Black 2.5-2" joiner off turbo instead of BLUE!!!!!! one which kind of disrupts the OEM look.
-Fit trio of autometer traditional chrome gauges and single DIN stereo with custom Carbon fibre fascia.

Sounds like a lot but its a weekend and few after work sessions worth.
I have all parts, just no time.

Later:
-Drivers side Bride Vios III FRP Gradation or Recaro LX-M
-Respray
-New windscreen
-Jap exhaust (Blade Racing or Kakimoto)
-R31House floor mats
