> Pretty happy with how it turned out....I have to say I'm really enjoying this phase of the Hako project, where we're fabricating stuff and not just fixing things.

Ahhh... the hours I spent doing similar work on countless race cars. No matter how much air you catch to go through the radiator at speed, it matters not if it cannot get out of the engine compartment as well.

Lucky the hako has a front-hinged hood as otherwise, you may be creating a huge positive pressure area. Louvers in the hood surface are sometimes used accordingly for pressure relief - which also promotes over the body airflow, as opposed to under the body airflow, which at speed is a bit of a nasty. Though not sure you'll be running a LSR attempt or not.

But, the simplest solution to promoting air-flow might simply be to remove the trailing edge rubber seal you just installed, or to block lower resistant paths than the radiator? Neko.

Louvres, you say....Hmm.

Louvres are made by stamping dies, like dimple dies. I will have to look into this :D

I tried that remove the rear bonnet rubber thing and got fumes in the cabin on my old R31.

Which is exactly what will happen if this (or the louvers) is done on the Hako. 8)

If you really want to do this, you should also block off the cowl vents. It will not only aid smoother airflow, it will keep the engine fumes/smells from filling the passenger compartment.

Monaro GTS guard flutes, moite :)

By the way, I had a chance to drive Hako to work this morning, and from a close examination of the water temps, I can confirm that the new shrouding appears to achieve....nothing....at city driving speeds :)

We'll see if it makes any difference to the temps at high speed at the next trackday...

Yeah, Monaro flutes is exactly what I was thinking :D
If they don't work, paint them black.
That way no one will see them and ask if they work. :tu:

Put Mobil 1 in it, and it would smell like an old Porsche with the heater on then...

Just read what I actually wrote there.
What I mean is:-
if your neat new ducting doesn't work, paint it black etc.....

As if you'll ever run out of things to do pfft.
It's an old car. there will always be something to do.
The problem will be when you get bored with it as sometimes happens when you get into something with air conditioning and electric windows......
And a turbo  Muhuhahaha

especially something with a stupidly oversized turbo

That's the beauty of old cars. When you're done, it will be just about time to start over at the beginning. 8)

Slightly off topic.... How many models after your Skyline did these hit the market ? Looks like Nissan/ Datsun went back to Hako styling cues of the late 60's early 70's instead of continuing with the Datsun 240K GTR style. The original style lines were much nicer... but this one has improved on the classic shape in a modern way. Where these ever available in Australia Kev ?

BTW images have started disappearing in your updates, a real shame because its a great epic read ! Its the main reason I stopped using on line hosting sites. JNC should host images for builds like this to prevent it from happening.

Images should be ok, my Photobucket account is a paid/unltd bandwidth one. Just reload.

That black coupe above is a C210, which is 2 generations after Hako. Immediately after Hako was the C110 Kenmeri, which was available as the 240K (not badged Skyline) in Oz in both coupe and sedan forms.
Image

The C210 was also offered in Australia in coupe and sedan form too.
Image

The C210 is a very underrated classic, which in Japan has already started to appear in the classic car mags in modified form, so I reckon it's only a matter of time before more ppl realise they are mechanically more or less identical to the earlier Skylines and can be fitted with the triple carbed L-series goodness too...

Then in 1981 we had the R30 series, which was sold in 5dr hatch and sedan forms over here. We never got the Iron-mask nose tho, we only got the big grille/Paul Newman version
Image

Then we had the aussie-made R31 in sedan and wagon forms
Image

...and that was it. 100 R32 Skyline GT-Rs were sold here but that was the last domestically-sold Skyline until the R35. Of course in Japan, the Skyline model range has always been on sale in sedan and coupe form.

Thanks for the history lesson :)

I had a look around the net for c210's, and can now recall seeing them around in the early 80's both in sedan and hardtop form. Looking at original hardtop photos makes it obvious why they arent appreciated.. They look bloody awful !!

The black one above would be a rare exception, it looks like there were turbo variants of the hardtop shape. Probably a JDM special just like the first series Rx7s. I think Ive seen more Rx3s driving around over the past ten years than c210s, they must be thin on the ground.

As for the other Nissans/ Datsuns... I recall when they were as common as a Falcon, how things change with time. So.... did the black c210 above ever come with the wheel arch flares as a factory fitment. Sorry to post stuff slightly off topic, just wanted to point out that the c210 (side profile) looks very similar to your Hako with a modern touch !

Yes, well the project leader for all of the generations of Skyline, up to the C210 was Dr Shinichiro Sakurai (who passed away very recently) and he was quite passionate about maintaining the design continuity of the marque. So if yoy look at the C210, you see quite a few echoes of the Hako in the surfline crease over the back wheelarch, to the shape of the c-pillar, among other things.

Well back in the late 70s in Japan, the top factory C210 was a turbo version, a 145ps two litre six cylinder L-series. But it was a narrowbody and didn't come with any flares or spoilers. I think they were reasonably popular, since the price was a hell of a lot more attainable than the Hako or Kenmeri GT-Rs (which were pretty much twice the price of a normal Skyline).
Image

Aussie versions were a 97kw injected 2.4L L-series, and they sold reasonably well back in the early 80s. I agree that in stock form without flares and withj skinny wheels, they look a little underwhelming, but I reckon you could say the same thing about the Hako and the Kenmeri Skylines too :) Flares, spoilers, lowered suspension and a set of fat Watanabes makes all the difference, eh :D That black one in your pic is nowhere near stock :)
