It's still shit?
Haven't been on for a while because I kept getting some sort of database error message after logging in. Weird.
Anyway, it turned out that the problem was an epic 7M-esque BHG. It looked like this:
That's between 2 and 3.
It then looked like this for a while:
So I fixed the BHG, put all new timing gear on it and drove it. For a grand total of 1200km, then a bearing shat itself.

. Oh joy.
Pretty sure it's a balance shaft bearing, but as the bearings were on their way out before the BHG I think the extra compression that fixing it and skimming the head gave may have been a bit much.
Anyway, in between fixing the BHG and slaughtering a bearing the car got new shoes:
Front: 14x6J +17 Fortran Mesh, 185/65R14 Simes.
Rear: 14x6J +10 flatface Cheviot Hotwires, 185/65 Goodyears.
Yes, it needs more low. I'm working on it.
CBF rebuilding, and I can't really afford to either. So another bottom end courtesy of an '89 Magna is in the offing, as soon as I buy myself a RWD S2 Astron timing case and sump, and a VRS kit. It'll all bolt up, but with the standard S1 head it will have mucho CR. Like nearly 12:1. Hopefully it lasts, otherwise I'm back to hunting bottom ends. I'll also need the gearbox from my other Scorpion, and the clutch and flywheel from the Magna.
The high CR wouldn't really be a problem, bar a few small things. Stock carb, stock cam, stock exhaust, stock exhaust manifold, you see where I'm going here? EVERYTHING else is completely bone stock. Which makes it seem kind of pointless, but we do what we can with what we have.
On the upside, it should make an extra 15hp or so
Rego's up soon too, on the 23rd. So somewhere in between swapping bottom ends, gearboxes and other assorted pleasantries I need to chase up $850 for that.
I should probably mention that I've been finding rust, rust and more rust every time I look at this. There's a hole in the passenger door jamb(sp?), one just behind the bottom rear corner of the passenger door and enough surface rust in the spare wheel well to make most rat rods jealous.
I've sanded the surface stuff as best I can and hit it with blue killrust, it looks like balls but it's not like people are going to see the crappy exterior and go hunting in the boot for more ugly. The holes will get bogged and primered once the bastard child motor is in.
This is very much the quintessential shitter, apart from the silly engine. Rust, bog, gay paint etc. It's shit, and it gives me altogether too much grief, but it's certainly cooler than the myriad Commodores/Falcons with dubz and subz that the other young'uns get around in. I suppose I should be grateful that I don't have to deal with an Emotec or Buick 3.8. My God, they are painful engines.
Anyways, this thread is now up-to-date. I'll be back with more updates and/or shit-talk about what I plan to do but never will at a later date
