I do have the long term racing contingency plan however. My '59 Alfa should be allowed without too many issues. (Its clearly old enough, and there are already a few that run.) I'd rather race the roadster however. The extra 750cc of displacement go a long way.

That Exa is owned by a friend of mine and is still raced in obsolutely original form.
Runs in Historic GrpA and GrpC.

True, except he's my friend too! and it's only in original form when he isn't breaking gearboxes and using Tercel :shock:

This past weekend I set off to get my Vintage racing license at VARA University held at Buttonwillow Raceway just out side of Bakersfield. All I have to say is that it was the best $350 2 day track day I've ever done. I highly recommend checking it out next year if you have ever wanted or thought about doing some vintage racing. Its good stuff. I had nearly 300 miles on track between the two days.

For the "Final Exam" we did full race starts, with open passing. The first few were only 3/4 of a lap, but still a take no prisoners all out race. The first one I was gridded about 6th or so. I went down the middle at the start and won the race. The second one we did I ended up being gridded somewhere near the back. We had a few Formula V open wheel cars in the mix, some very small displacement cars (less than 1300 cc) a whole slew of Long Beach Grand Prix Celebrity Challenge Toyota Celicas (rental race cars for those people who didn't have a vintage car to run) as well as some other stuff. Even though I started near the back within the 3/4 of a lap we raced I was up to 6th.

For the final race it was a one lap race. I was gridded 2nd (the car on pole should not have been there even though the guy driving was an excellent driver) and I was on the outside in 2nd. Long story short, a Porsche 2.7RS challenged me for the lead down the front straight, but I beat him to the corner, had position and closed the door from the outside of the corner on him. From there I watched the whole field disappear in my rear view mirror. I took the checkered flag by a little less than 1/2 a lap for my first road racing win (Yeah I know it was a 1 lap sprint race, but a win is a win. :wink:

)

I have to say the car was awesome. I was pulling a calculated 130 mph down the back straight (redlined in 5th at 7200 rpm) and the car ran flawlessly.
Here are a few shots taken over the weekend.

There was also a 1600 racing roadster that I had never seen before. For the final race, he was gridded on Pole, but didn't have enough motor to stay at the front. It was cool to have 2 roadsters leading the field.

This 240Z was built by BRE for a customer. The guy who has it now is a fried of mine. The car is VERY fast.

Yes, the 914 was passed as well, however I couldn't keep him behind me. I missed a shift and he blew past. I wasn't able to catch him again.

All in all, an awesome weekend. The next step is to get into the VSCCA/HSR-West event at Laguna Seca the last weekend in April. Its looking like there will be 3 roadsters with the outside possibility of at least another one.
