Hello all,

As I can see the thread has grown a lot since I last posted. I had been busy enjoying my time off from work & working on the C110.

Few things I bought from YAJ.






I wanted to re-install the original badges so I ordered what was missing and the correct GT-R badges.




Once the rain let up I started to pull off the current badges and installed the new ones.









If you look closely you can see the original holes for the GT-X badges. The mounting studs on the GT-R badges run up & down vs. side to side so I'll have to weld those up. I have a trick to remedy that until I decide to pull the panel off to fix the dent & weld the holes up.



Since I don't have the exact measurements on where the badge sits. I pulled out a copy of my favorite magazine "Nostalgic Hero". If you look closely you can see the badge is placed slightly off to the right of the skyline badge. The top of the R lines up about halfway down the middle of the "E" on the skyline badge.









Rather than just drilling holes without making sure it’s even I used tape below as a guide to make sure everything is lined up. I also added some paste to the back of the mounting studs so once I had decided on a final location the paste would leave a white mark on the panel to show where to drill


Next what to do with the original holes? Well I plan to remove the rear panel to repair the dent that could be seen in a few of the pictures. But at the current moment I want to enjoy the car before I start to tear into it. So what I’ll do is lay a bit of epoxy glue as a skim coat between the holes. It’s not a permanent fix but will remedy the problem until I weld up the holes. I also have some grey metallic paint left over from past jobs I've done that I could use as touch up.



The epoxy sets in less than 5 minutes which allows the glue to remain stiff. I set some tape over the holes then punctured the holes. The tape allows me to spread the glue in the hole without getting it all over. Let it set for two minutes & then removed the tape.

Although the badge has small retaining clips as security measure I added some double stick tape



The color of epoxy actually somewhat matches the panel. I still plan to touch it up with some paint.




Next the front badge & the water pump. I can see I have a few ppl to reply to so Ill get to that first.

For now just enjoy the car. I did get another pair of Watanabe wheels from a member here. 15x12 -51. I had planned to put them on the c10 but maybe Ill put them on the c110.

How did you know it’s a Mach 1? The pictures don’t give much detail. Oh and yes that’s one of my cars.



If xs10shl comes out we must have a meet. I waited a long time for this car but waited even longer to see an s20 in the flesh.

Next the front badge

The rear badge should have the surrounding surfaces blacked out similar to the rear badge.




Time to mask the face off & spray some S.E.M. trim black. I started to use a grey scotchbrite but as you can see its not coarse enough to prep the surface so I switched to the red scotchbrite.



Masking the face using painters tape & razor blade.







The difference once using the red scotchbrite.



After scuffing all the surfaces really good it's time for some color.





After three coats & letting it dry






There are a few edges that need to be defined but that will be fixed by some polish.

Holy cow, nice job masking that front emblem. Not a whole lot for you to clean up, hm? This is a nice education for me, as I never knew the Kenmeri GT-R emblems were any different until I saw this thread.

I don't know how hot it gets where you are, but those aftermarket water pumps are a known problem. The stamped steel impeller doesn't pump water as well as the stock cast steel impeller.

I've had 3 Datsuns with cooling problems that were hard to diagnose. All were fixed with removing that pump and installing a factory pump.

wow thats an amazing detailed post just for emblems! definitely makes me look forward to the rest of the build! oh and the emblems came out great too

usually 100-110 would be the hottest around here for a few days out of the year.

as for meeting up im always down for a meet. unfortunately my Z can't join the skyline fun, but ill bring one of my other non-JNC rides..

So the water pump was leaking when It arrived. Not much but it was time to swap out a new one.



I figured the water pump on the L20 would be the same as on L28 so that’s what I ended using.




The old & the new



It appears they both are similar.



As datsunfreak pointed out the old pump impeller is made of cast steel.



I didn’t like color of the pulley and while it was off I decided to paint it black.







The fan was in good condition



New pump installed.



Before I put everything back together I wanted to make sure the pulley and fan lined up.





While I was painting the pulley I decided to pull the alternator bracket as the paint looked a bit tired & needed a fresh coat.




After



Final product with everything put back together.




Next the side rear quarter panel emblems. It appears the sun will be back out tomorrow so I will take the car out for a spin.
