Hey all,

Hoping someone can help me with the model designation codes for the earlier generation Civics.

Generation 1

Generation 2

Was this just facelifted Gen 1, or did it get it's own identification code ?

Generation 3
Image

Generation 4
Image
I know this was just the facelifted version of Gen 3, but same question, did the model receive a different designation code ?

Generation 5

This is an EA, right ?

Thanks
Dave

Yup, pinched one of the pic's from there

but they still call them generations, no model designation codes. Surely Honda had to have some form of coding ??? Like Corolla KE, TE, AE etc etc

The first two are both first generation. The early one is the 73-77 style, the second is the 78/79 style. Different bumpers and such, but still the same car.

The next two are both second generations, one early (80/81) and one late (82/83 with the square headlights).

Models were designated as to what engine and transmission you had in it, such as mine is a SGD (pretty sure that's what it is) for a Civic 1500 with Hondamatic transmission. The tag is on the radiator support on the US models, and I'm pretty it's in the first few of the VIN too. The early 1200's were mostly SB cars with the next digit being what the transmission was, Mostly SB1 from what I recall. If I can find the info on my computer somewhere I should have all the different variations saved somewhere....

Yep 1st gen is SB1 which includes your picture 2. There's an SB2 but I don't know what it is.
2nd gen SA9 which includes your picture 4
Not sure of third gen
4th gen is SH3/4 (3,4 = number of doors)
5th gen is SR3/4

The year and designations may differ in your area: for Oceania they were known as:

1st gen series
EB1 1169cc '73
EB2 1238cc '77
EB3 1238cc '79
EC1 1500cc '76

2nd gen series
EN1 1335cc '80

3rd gen series
EV2 1342cc '84
EW2 1488cc '84

They changed to 4th gen around '87 and again '92

Thanks for the info :tu: The EB codes are engine codes, not body codes.

Thanks for all the input guys

And just in case someone else requires it, all the codes can be found here ...
