I remember this car...

Just as a side note, Christian ended up selling your 280zx when he went back overseas. Not sure where it lives now.

In Dec 1973 RT104GT-MQFG serial number 012064 was prepared for the Toyota Division in South Melbourne (Australian Motor Industries).
It was driven off a boat in Feb 1974 and registered LUO833 sight unseen by Vic Roads and began its life as a developmental car that AMI was going to assess for suitability to import in limited numbers.
I understand that the MD of AMI drove it around along with a purple GT Celica.
I am told more often it did 180's on wet roads when driven by his wife on Yokaham radials.
It was quite powerful to drive..
It ran the Toyota high compression 18RG engine, P51 F series gearbox and 4.111 7.5 inch LSD.
The live rear axle is totally unique to TRD nothing like a Corona, it has pins and locating rods and the whole car set up more like a sports sedan than a Corona.
It had a top speed demonstrated of exactly 200 km/h at 6500 rpm in 5th.
In 1975 it passed thru dealers including Weribbee and then onto Stawell Dealer Nalders and was driven by mechanic Steve Baird.

I saw it once in the main street of Ballarat in 1975 and again at the Golden Mile Hill climb at Ararat where I believe it set a course record for a production sedan.
In June 1974 Modern Motor did a full page liftout story in full colour.

TOYOTA STATED
NO IMPORTS OF THE GT CELICA OR CORONA WILL OCCUR.


In late 1976 Nalders called me and said if I wanted it to go to a Toyota Dealer in Campbellfield and offer them $4500, I could buy the car.
It was being trucked to Sydney.

I intercepted the car on a Friday and paid $2000 deposit and the balance on the Monday and acquired it with 52000 km of developmental time on the speedo.
I was told go away take it away do not tell people that these cars are for sale cos they are not going to be offered here in Australia.


In 1977 Toyota approached me to use the car as a service vehicle in the 1977 Singapore Airlines London to Sydney Rally and it was used to service ultimate Class A winner Wes Nalder and Noal Richards in their 3KB Corolla Coupe.
It was seconded to Toyota again in 1978 to support the three Celica GT's driven by Hilton, Hurrey and Nalder in the Repco Around Australia trial and again conveyed personnel and parts to wherever they were needed in the east coast regions of the rally stages.

It was often used to run ahead of the pack to trip the CAMS radar traps, which would result in a crew being disqualified if caught speeding.


The car was never rallied per-se it was set up for rallying with 90A alternator and four Cibie Super Oscars and a sump guard, the original steel wheels widened to 6 inches and monroe shock aborbers.

We often fitted new parts to test for Toyota including a W50GT box and 3.9 diff on occasions.
We also fitted the first disc brake rear end for a live axle.
Another was imported and fitted to Hurreys GT Celica in 1978.


The car was retired with a leaky head gasket around 1980 and sat in my shed until 1992 when I sent it to the Toyota buffs in Mosyton (Jenkins) and they cursed and ground and stripped all the scratches and dents and restored it.

By 1986 many spares came into the country via API at Springvale and the car nearly had a 3TGTEU fitted but we decided not to bastardise it and leave it original.



In 2004 I totally sourced all the bearings and rebuilt the diff and gearbox.

I pulled out the 3.9 and W50 box and refitted the P51 Box.

The early Toyota 9.7:1 CR head was retired with its small valves and bad gasket retention.


The head is now a stronger later Yamaha with better valves and it runs on PULP OK.

A top overhaul with rings and bigends was done around 150,000 km.

New clutch and pressure plate, thrust bearing and drive train repairs.

It is so original it still runs a points dizzy, we have not upgraded to electronc but have the parts.

The only other MOD was to fit rear disc brake calipers, but it still has a rear drum hand brake.
And we still have the old drum brakes ala Corona. :oops:
KM 242000 still has original steering box, tailshhaft, it has had new tie rod ends and balljoints.

The bonnet is not original or the radiator as we hit a roo back in 1978.


To the best of my knowledge I have only ever seen a GT or coupe in japan and no other GT in Australia or New Zealand of this mark.

Maybe someone can tell me otherwise.

Yeah I saw it on the OZDAT site and gave the boys a rev for passing up a car with a $4000 engine.

Without getting too far off topic, yeah the engine in the Z was pretty damn good, abit too good for christian as he kinda-sorta put the car sideways into a gaurd rail on the Great Ocean Rd lol.

Not sure how good your memory is, but im his girlfriends cousin - the "young" bloke [i say it that way as it was a few yrs ago now...] that drove the car after Christian stalled it about 9 times.

Original colour as per the plate is 903 and you will find the colour on the Toyota calendar.

The erason this car has survived and most other Coronas rust out is the double hot dip the car had as it was prepared for the CEO of Toyota Australia.

The coating was so difficult to remove that when we refurbished it we ust cleaned up the rust in the lower panels and took the clear back to base coat and repainted in two pack using a coulour match from under the boot lid.

The two photos are 30 years apart NOV 1976 and NOV 2006.

No its in the shed with flat tyres.

I will try to explain the geometry of the 120HP GT2000 CORONA.

Imagine a live rear axle.
Onto that axle you weld two square u shaped brackets facing up.
Two facing forward.

The two forward brackets connect to locating arms that swing up and down.
The two upward brackets have a large pin through them.
On the leaf spring is a square block with a big rubber bush..
The pin goes through this bush.
The leaf springs are free to caster around 15 degrees about centre.
Next fit a stabiliser bar across top of axle.
Two big shocks straight up.
Two piece tailshaft.
LSD 4.111
Rapid acceleration right up to 7000 rpm in 1st 2nd 3rd, 6000 in 4th >>160KM/h 5500 in 5th 200 kph.
No axle wind up of any sort.
Very stable at speed over all sorts of surfaces.

This car was tested over the outback roads of Australia
I have driven it sustained high speeds hour after hour.
We came down the dirt from Alice to Port August in 1977 in 10 hours.

The car could sustain speeds around 150 km/h on dirt for hours.

The only mod we did in 1985 was fit rear celica disc brakes which improved the breaking balance under decelerating braking in corners.

The rear axle assembly in the GT2000 was quite unique and is found often with coil springs these days.

Cant aford the PULP/AVGAS


I have typed every variation of Corona GT into the web browsers, and it appars the four door works sedan has indeed becoem an orphan.

:cry: I saw another one years back but nothing on any search engine ever since.

Even the caledar showing the purple car has gone from th nternet.

You are right I need to pump up he tyre and take it for a drive just to hear those mikuni solex humming and sucking air.

This is a story in itself.

In 1995 I attended university and around the corner was an engine repair shop with a 3TGTE engine in the front window.

I called in one day and showed a guy called Shaun (Maloney) my photos of a 3TGTE into a TE72.

We got to talking about Mikuni SOlEX carbies and I told him I had an 18RG that idled like a two stroke so he suggetsed I bring the car in.

I said no can do,
its 300 miles way so he said Can you bring in the carbies??
I took down the carbies and he noted they were concentric serial numbers and was intrigued as to where they came from.
It cost me $400 and he fully reconditiond them with new shafts bushes, jets, venturi air jets etc.

I took them home and lovingly fitted them to the GT and after the usual choke start (Yep the Corona GT has CHOKE). The car warmed up and settled down to a text book 800 rpm idle so quiet you could hear the timing belt tickie tick sound that these engines make.


Inspired by the great job that Shaun did I pulled out all the NOS spares I had carried with me since 1977 and rebuilt the timing chains with gears, pulleys and idlers.

Now there is no pump up rattle and the engine starts runs and idles like in the past 30 years ago.

I think Shaun passed away .

Garry Macs Toyota is now run by his son.

Everyone is getting old and passing on.

I dread someone getting this car ad fitting a turbo JZE or some such concoction.

It would be sacrilidge.

TRD I guess its what comes with the car from the factory. Nothing fits from a standard corona.

I recall seeing one RT104 Corona GT for sale in NZ, unsure if it was the same specification as your example. Was definently a Japanese Import RT104 with 18RG
