Datsun Silvia S110 SR20DET project

Hello from Holland,

Today I bought this Datsun Silvia S110 from 1981 with only 30k-miles on the clock!! The planning is to upgrade the power-output by swapping the engine & gearbox. Also upgrade the suspension & brakes & differential.

Engine & gearbox:
The 1.8l-engine is now in with the BMW-M3-style gearbox.
I'd love to put in the FJ20ET-engine, because this engine is also from the 80's, but unfortunately the FJ20ET's aren't sold in Europe.
So my 2nd option is to buy a 200SX S14 with the SR20DET engine, and swap the engine and gearbox into my S110.
What are the diffilcuties by this swap? Does someone has experience with it?

Rear suspension:
The rear suspension is 4-link type, so not IRS.
What are the options with making this LSD? Or is it possible to make it IRS (independent?)
With the standard rear axle, what are upgrade spring & damper choices?

Front suspension & steering:
Is it possible to swap the complete front suspension with power steering from another Nissan?
or,
What are the damper & spring options? are there coilovers available?

I'd like to know what parts from other Nissan's are interchangeable? Is the S110 based on a Skyline? 280Z?

So, that's been it for now, hopefully you can give me some advice:
For the last 5 years I was driving an Pulsar N14 GTI with (some) modifications

Very nice. I've wanted a notchback version for awhile now, to put an FJ in and take it rallying in the desert.

Very nice Silvia. I love the color. With such originality, I would just keep it stock and enjoy driving it.

So you bought it from Koog aan de Zaan right?
I have ben looking at the car on internet but i think it was a little bit high priced. Is it as good as the advert said?

Hi Eric,

No, it's much better then the advert said!

It's in absolutely showroom-state! No rust, no scratches and even the original radio is still in! I think the last time that the car have seen the road was back in 1989!

And I paid not as much as it was priced for! I'll let the insurance company decide what the real value is! I'll be not suprised if they value it higher then I bought it!

Do you also have an topic on the SOSX forum?

First I'd like to upgrade the front-end! Mainly the nostalgic steering-system!

Do you install the S14 steering-rack / subframe on your Datsun? I'm not such a specilist of the S13/S14 models as you are! :wink:

I have fitted s14 front subframe and s13 lca's/steering rack, coilovers etc. to the datsun, still have to figure out the rear end though.

i cant remember what the asking price was but i thought it was pretty high. Hopefully the insurance company will bring yoiu good news

Do you know the differences between the S13 and S14 subframe & suspension? Only the track-widht (spoorbreedte :wink:

I discovered the dutch-datsun site yesterday, I'll soon introduce myself, but first I've to take my Sunny GTI apart to sell the parts and make some room in my garage for the S110!

Low or high priced is a bit relative, because give your car a full respray is expensive and I hate welding up my car because it's full of rust.
The technical part is what I like! Get rid of rust and working on the panels it's not my cup of tea! :wink:

s14 is wider due to the longer lca's.
its about 4 cm in total i guess.
i had s14 lca's on my datsun but changed them for s13 ones because of the length.

I'm gonna store the engine in my garage! So I can bring the car in original condition back if I want over 30 years! :wink:

thats nice, i thought about doing the same thing on my datsun but i used the s14 steering rack and that sits on the back of the subframe so i couldnt use the backwars tension rods. the s110 has the same setup as an s13? with front facing tension rods?
