Hello all,

I'm Justin New to the site and the radical world of Toyota's. I just got a 78 Celica GT coupe with a 5spd. The engine is on the downhill, so I found 16v 4age with trans, ecu and harness for cheap.

I'll be starting the swap in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone might have some helpful advice or suggestions before I start. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Justin

Wow finally someone with a 2nd gen celica haha. Car looks nice. i wish i could help ya on that but im doing a ka24de. Go to 1stgencelica.com they have plenty of info. Even though there ment for the 1st gen the front end stuff is very similar. And also i belive club4ag has the wiring info and ecu pins for what each wire does.

Why take a 2200cc engine out and replace it with a 1600cc one? :( Even if it makes a little more power, it makes way less torque...and your Celica is a fair bit heavier than an AE86. You should sell the 4A-GE to a Corolla or Starlet guy and put a 22R in there (easiest), or 2RZ/3RZ (best). AA63 is the only Celica that ever came with a 4A-GE...not exactly rocketships.

Just my opinion though...

18R-G is my personal preference for that chassis.

I say either 20/22R combo hybrid or a 3RZ.

I cant wait to see how this turns out. I am looking to pick up a 70s Toyota (although Im hoping for a first gen celica or a Corolla) in the next couple months and will likely end up doing this exact swap. I myself am not looking for a ton of power, just decent weight and a reliable engine.

Do you have experience with swaps in the past? Do you have a decent garage and tool set? If its not asking too much I would be grateful for a good write up. I am gathering info on engine swaps right now, but havent seen many good write ups for putting an engine so new into a car so old.

Here are some crapy phone cam pics (I lost my camera) of the engine. Needs some more cleaning up and maybe some paint. I think Ill need to modify the oil pan to clear the crossmember before it will fit.

I need to finish this up before I can really tackle the swap.

+1 on the 4age swap. You might want to do the timing belt/waterpump and fix the distributor leak while it's still out of the car.

Looks like a 260z or maybe 280z. yeah kinda sucks that the 22r is a mid sump. I had to do the same to my ka to fit it in.

I got my header all finished up, the new tail pipe made, cant wait to hear it.
I think I have all the wiring figured out, and the fuel pump in. I got the wrong clutch fork, and couldnt find one so I had to order a new. Still need to get the driveline too. Oh and an oil cooler.
