Hey all, I am thikning about picking up a 72 corona hardtop for a summer backroads beater. I was just curious what kind of parts on this thing interchange with some of the newer toyotas? Axles, transmission etc? Looks like it is running a 18r and a 4 speed so engine parts shouldnt be too hard to find. I just wanted to know about drivetrain parts mainly. I'm gonna beat on it hard, so if it breaks I dont want it to end up being like my old mitsubishis which can take forever to find a axle or old trans. strut housing etc..

parts arnt hard to find because you make them...

Take newer parts and modify them to fit

im not to knowledgeable about Coronas but most theses classic Toyota cars pre 80's dont have a broad after market selection but i could be wrong

I wasnt asking about aftermarket parts. You dont make axles, you dont make ring and pinions. I wanna know if I will be able to find this stuff if I end up braking it.

Why would you want to "beat" on a 1972 Corona? They're not exactly a fast car, and don't handle well either. They're actually a fairly uncommon car that I'm sure someone would like to have as a project for a proper build. Parts for the Corona aren't easy to find and after one thing breaks that would probably be the end of your fun for a while.

no offense but I dont buy cars to look pretty at a car show. I drive the piss out of everyone single one of my cars. It shouldnt handle half bad the hard top looks like a decent setup. Besides im bnot looking for a formula one car. Just because something is slow doesnt mean it isnt fun.

Anyhow people say the same things to me when I tell them im gonna cut up a perfectly good z car and put zg flares on it. Frankly im saving the car if anything. There is nothing wrong with driving the piss out of a car.

not to hot on that gen of corona's...


but...

the slightly newer ones (74ish +) share the same suspension setup as the hilux. and the control arms/spindels/ tie rod assy are interchangeable for rona's and hilux's up to early 78, then the rona went to struts.


so id be willing to bet it has the same suspension under it as a 71-72 hilux, and that is confirmed the same as the later lux's up to 78.


the only real problem i see is replacement axl's (rears for those not paying attention) i dont think any newer leaf sprung axl is a bolt on, cept maybe a te51 (79)or earlier corolla. so you would have to make new spring perches, but on a high note, it should be VERY easy to swap to a 5 lug and get a practicly indestructable 8in diff.


then if the motor n tranny go, slap a 2xR in there with a W58.


if you damage body parts, your pretty much F'd. there used to be a guy on here ( http://www.turbocreations.com/corona/ ) that horded early corona's and sold through that site, not sure if he's still around or not.

I'm not saying not to do it. I drive the hell out of all my cars. That's what they are meant for. People who restore these cars thinking they're going to get a lot of money, don't make sense to me. After all they are cars. They're meant to be driven. I'm just questioning your model choice. The corona just isn't the sporty car. Its basically a truck underneath. Not to say it can't be done. Just more a question of your model selection. The Corona wasn't known as a corner carver. And are actually quite heavy in comparison. But hell if it's cheap enough then go for it.

it's 300 bucks and straight as a arrow, with just a little rust. I'll probably pick it up in the next few days.
