Okay, so who has an unmolested all original Celica GT liftback?

I'm the second owner of my car, which I've had for over 20 years. When I got my car it was a trade-in at a dealer and they redid the headliner before I took possession of the car. The headliner has held up well but it is starting to sag. I would like to get it fixed, but I've had differing responses as to what kind of headliner was original to the car. My current headliner appears to be vinyl (one piece). I've been told it was originally vinyl, and also told it was more of a fabric (felt-like) material. Anyone know for sure?

I'll try to get a picture of my headliner uploaded ASAP.

Thanks for looking and responding.....

Sorry, I can't help you on the headliner question, but what a thoroughly beautiful and unmolested RA29...!!
It's great that there are still cars like this out there.
Best of luck with your new headliner... :tu:

Thanks!

Are you good with a camera? Do you think you could provide some close-up pictures of it? I'm curious as to the look & texture.

A buddy of mine is the original owner of his 77 too, but he had the headliner replaced years ago before he became a JNCer and so he didn't recall what the original was....

Thanks.
Texture looks different than mine. And you're right, it's hard to take good pictures of the material.

Mine...

What color is your car and what color is the headliner? Is the headliner the same color as the rest of the interior?

I've had few Lift-backs including 2 I now own, all have felt-like fabric headliners.

Okay, that might put a twist on things.... do you know if those were all original? If bought used, they could easily have had undergone some changes over the years. Headliner replacements seem to be common. Looks like you live in L.A. - so I'll assume these were US cars? What years were they?

I am talking about USDM 1976-77 Lift Back.

My First Lift back was a 77 yellow with tan interior one owner car back in 1984 with 20 odd thousand miles.
Then over the years I had bought and sold few Lift Backs and don't recall ever seeing anything but felt like headliner.

In 1998 I had bought pair of 1976 Silver lift backs, one from original owner in Santa Monica California (70 something Japanese gentleman who kept all the records of the car down to gas fill-ups) with 43K miles which I currently own and another was sold in 2002... both having felt like head liner.

Phew! Now having said all that since I have never had a brand new Celica Lift Back I couldn't tell you with 100% conviction that ALL 76-77 Celica's came with either vinyl or felt like head liner.

Thanks..... boy, this is getting more confusing. I'm wondering if they came both ways?

I talked to the Toyota Museum today and theirs has vinyl. To the best of anyone's knowledge, it is original.

Guess I need to do more digging.

All 5 of the ones I have owned, have had vinyl. The three or so I have run across in junkyards lately, have had vinyl as well.

all that I have seen have been vinyl. I took mine out as it was sagging terribly and the car was 100% stock when I got it. just black vinyl same texture as the interior panels. hope that helps!

Thanks for all the replies guys. Between here and the feedback I got from people on Faceback, it looks like it's vinyl. I think this is undeniably verified by the original owners that have been able to confirm this. Without a doubt any cars with fabric or felt headliners are due to being replaced at one time or another. :tu: :D

Sorry for late answer,I was out for some days. Mine is maroon metallic with ivory interior. I bought it new so what you see is original.
