Well - we got back the Vane AFM from rebuild at Bavarian Restorations and it appears that they did a fantastic job in doing the refurb on this unit. Completely disassembled, spring adjusted, wipers checked and signal tested with an oscilloscope. The unit was then cleaned and clearcoated and looks fantastic. Huge props to those guys, and I recommend them - in my case, I was not going to be able to find a replacement at a junkyard so I wanted someone with experience to tackle it.

Seems the AFM was the culprit in the running issues in the Carina. I am unable to take it out tonight since I have it stuck in the back of the shop - but I have a feeling it will drive like a dream now.

More pictures and videos forthcoming now that the car is back together!

Unfortunately that ray of hope was short lived. Pulled it out of the shop to do some test driving before trying to bring it to the local Cars & Coffee.

Although improved enough that I could drive around the block a few times for about 10 minutes, the car still hesitates and dumps fuel at random RPM's. Even at idle, it will randomly start stalling out for 5-10 seconds every so often. I am starting to become more and more frustrated with this car - especially since I was told plenty of great things about it from the seller.

Any other Toyoheads have a suggestion? I am all ears.

Check fuel pressure, and check the distributor cap/rotor.

I ended up putting a fuel pressure gauge at the fender mounted fuel filter. Fuel pressure idled around 36 PSI, but dropped when I worked the throttle. I have a Walbro to stuff in it in the next couple of weeks when I get the time.

I have a feeling that this car was driven on empty from the unloading dock to the shop they kept it at until bringing it to me. Probably cratered the pump. Guess that's my luck.

Finally have this thing running and driving like a charm!

So, the inline fuel pump had failed. We noticed that the pump itself could pump fuel, but it was unable to hold fuel pressure at all going to the rail. The pump itself posed problems because of the end fittings (Banjo in, Male M14 Inverted Flare Out) and our desire to make it as easy as possible to go back to an OEM pump. (Which was not available anywhere in the States)

We decided to drop the tank to inspect it - in case there was some trash to be cleaned out. We were not prepared to expect that the entire tank had a minimum of a 1/16" of calcified crust/rust throughout every square inch. Easily thr worst gas tank we had ever seen in!

No rust through the tank walls thankfully - but it's amazing cars in Japan make any power considering just how much water is in their gas. (At least thats the only thing we could think of that would cause this).

After getting it cleaned on Memorial Day, we found an aftermarket pump that would almost work - but the output end had a nipple instead of a M14 connector. After hunting every parts store and hydraulics store in south Louisiana - we ended up finding a MX73 Cressida at Pull-a-Part. Hacking the hard line off of the car provided us the correct male fitting with enough hard line for us to join to the pump using fuel hose.

We swapped out the wiring connector and voila - this Carina runs fantastic now!! No sputtering, no hesitations, nothing but smooth and quick!

I hope to post a few videos soon!
