You can just replace strut inserts. SR5 struts are huskier then regular TE27 so may be harder to find. Now might be a good time to upgrade to AE86 struts. Direct bolt up but you need to keep your top hat. Better brakes but you can still use 13" rims. Lots of aftermarket upgrades as well.

thanks for the input. since posting this I was able to get the strut housing top retaining nut off (with the use of kroil oil) to release the insert...as well as the remaining oil. yep, finding a replacement for the SR5 is quite the challenge. the possilbe matches that come back have different dimensions. I am trying to keep this car stock for now and once she's done look into engine/suspension mods. I am assuming that with the ae86 setup my current brake calipers would not work.....just bought rotors and pads for this setup.

Rick form Toyhead auto says he can get me the correct inserts.....just ordered them from him.....hope they are actually the right size. A couple sites online claim to have the inserts for a 74 corolla but they are not the same size as I have which is a body length of 14.75, compressed 16.25 and extended 25.625. should know in 10 days or so.

Rick came through...Monroe strut insert 73935 are the answer. I have not completely put them back together but it looks like they will work. body length is 3/4 inch longer and diameter is also a bit larger but insert fits in outer shell and locking nut will secure it in place. will add more if I find any problems.
