Just purchased this 74 Corolla Peanut. I am a Honda guy. Love CRX's. So I am lost with this classic. Car does not have the engine but everything else is there including the 4-speed trans.

I have been agonizing over engine choices. I have medium engine skills. I was thinking a 16v 4age, but now thinking a 20R.

Any help would be appreciated.

3tc is a good start. parts are cheap and readily available. Also will require minimal supporting parts to get running since it's carby and not overly powerful.

carbed 4ag, anything fuel injected and your going to have to change the fuel setup 100% for a return line and high pressure pump. worth it in my opinion tho.
i would do a blacktop 20v if i had my choice.

3tc not bad but expensive when it comes time to make power.

3tc is not that expensive to get power from. A guy in Hawaii has a 3tc in his peanut and runs 11's with only a weber 32/36 blow thru setup, stock internals other than a small norris cam and maybe valve springs. PVC intercooler piping. If you know what you are doing you can make it happen. 3tcgarage is a great place to get info on the 3tc engine. 4age is the expensive engine to build. 3tc is bolt in as well.

I'm gonna jump on the band wagon and say the 3TC is the biggest bang for the buck in an early Corolla. It's not hard to make 200 hp out of a 3TC and that makes a 1900lb car scoot.

There are two 3tc engines in my area. I will look at them both this week and hopefully pull the trigger

Back in the 90's my uncle swapped a 3tc in his GTS because he priced everything out to build the 4age and it was insane. He ended up experimenting with blow thru turbo setup

Since some of these cars came with a 2TC, the 3TC makes the most sense for ease if thats what you want.

Lots of people get great power out of these motors and it seems cheap. If going big power the pistons seem inline price wise with most motors. Plus there is alot of info on 3tcgarage at making things work.

I just returned from at 850 mile trip to pick up this car from Arkansas. This is a picture from the pick-up from the hills of Arkansas

Image

I had time to stop at Pea Ridge Battle field National Park in Northern Arkansas

Finally home 1:30 am

Still haven't decided on engine. My daughter talked me out of getting the 3tc engine until we understand the cost of making it turbo
