Pretty rough, but what do you expect for $200 :) It was either I buy it, or my friend was taking it to the crusher...

Underneath and the fender wells are in pretty good condition considering, but it looks like it will be more Mod than Resto :)

Thanks,

Andrew

Good find. Have you checked if the motor still turns over? The T motors are pretty resilient and if it's not siezed you could probably get it running well enough.

Houston! Your Celica on Fabricated Motorsports is some of my inspiration...

The engine DOES turn over! Shouldn't be too hard to freshin' up :)

At first, I was just picking this up from a friend so it wouldn't get crushed. I had plans on keeping it for a long time and going daily/weekend full on restoration...BUT AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT...

After some research into this particular chassis, it isn't exactly what I thought it was. Being a "sedan" model I was under the impression it had the 3KC 1.2L engine and the T40 trans. But to my surprise ALL the 2-DOOR sedan models came with the 2TC 1.6L!!!

So without further ado, I've decided to get back into road racing with the SCCA after a 3-4 year hiatus. I ran Formula Mazdas for a couple years and ran out of steam and money.

NOW we have a full on race car project on our hands!!!!! PICS UP OF PROGRESS SOON!!!

Thanks,

Andrew

Sounds like a good choice. Those motors are great and fairly cheap to get running nice.

Picked up a friends spare AE86 diff and axles, pulled the drivetrain to start cleaning/modding, and threw the hood back on for good measure :)

One good thing about being a previous RX7 junkie, all kinds of different parts can be found after some digging around the garage. I've had about 5-6 over the years :)

Found a 2nd Gen. oil cooler that I will give some more TLC to later...

Also got my differential from Corey at 86garage.com! Thanks again...

Can't wait to see how this turns out. What's your plan for the engine?

Just a refresh with new bearings, seals, pumps and some 10.5:1 pistons(original is 8.5:1, if you didn't know :/). Possibly ditch the distributor and go full electronic ignition. Still debating on carbs, but will most likely go side draft.

AND...

WEIR Performance parts just arrived!!!!
4.77 R&P, Solid Spacer, and New Seals/Bearings :)

Next is their MAX Grip rebuild kit...

Thanks,

Andrew

Got everything off the front end and the windows out. Found that the inner fenders are in decent shape.

I'm really surprised at how far away the brake and gas pedals are. Did they not heel-toe shift in the '70s?! haha

2 dr sedans came with 1200 (KE20) and 1600 (TE21) motors. Yours is also a 74 model year. The AE86 rear will be about 4 inches wider then what you have now.

Glad you saved her.

It would have been an absolute sin to scrap that clean shell. Glad to see you're taking care of it! The light yellow is beautiful.

Yes sir. Hopefully in the next week or two.

I know, I know haha All these pictures look the same. BUT, besides some very minor things the car is about ready to go to the blaster.

I will probably remove the doors and bring them to him later with the trunk, fenders, and hood. Finally got everything under/on the dash removed. Also got all the fluid lines, gas tank, and left overs under the hood out.

Just about ready!!! :)

Thanks,

Andrew

Got a great quote from an old friend of mine that does restorations. $800 to media blast the entire car. Front, back, top, bottom, in and out. I was told by others it would be over $1,000. BUT, I think I will still do it in stages. Hopefully next week the car will go to him, his name is Billy and his shop is called Eviro Clean, and I'll have the interior and engine bay blasted and primed. Then time for roll cage, modding, and cleaning up the bay!

Thanks,

Andrew

I think you should leave it as is. Fix the rusty stuff, slap in the racing stuff and go have fun! Would look awesome all ratty next to the other shiny clean race cars!

I'm actually leaning towards that idea haha. The rusty parts are mostly on the floor pan, wheel well, and under the brake master cylinder in the engine bay. I may just blast and paint the inside and bay and leave the rest in all its glory :)
