Hey JNCers,

My name is Rob and I live in Rochester, NY. There isnt much love for nostalgics around here due to most of them rusting to dust years ago, so I sort of stand out in my weirdness for loving Toyota's from the 80's. I made a rash decision and bought an AW11 MR2 a couple years ago that turned out to be a complete nightmare. I have been trying to redeem that mistake by getting my hands on a good 80's toyota when I spotted a 1980 Corolla on craigslist yesterday. Called the guy, he only wanted $750. Knowing I had to act quickly, I called him and told him i would buy it that night. He sent me pictures to my phone and thats when my jaw dropped:

Turns out, the car really was owned by his grandmother. I told him to hold the car until 7 for me and I would buy it right that moment. He agreed and even called me at 5 to tell me he had other offers but was waiting on me.

Cash in hand, in my car at 6 i call him and said "i'm coming to pick up that car"

He replies "what car?"

"the corolla"

"oh someone just came and picked that up.

I needed to tell a group of people who could understand. Thanks for letting me vent.

Bad luck man, it looked nice and $750 was a good price.
Don´t sweat it. I am having problems picking up a car out here and there is nothing available in the $500 (to $3000!) price range.
Something else will come along.
I am taking a more Zen-like approach to my car search now. The right car will find me at the right time.
Good luck with your search and I hope something good comes your way soon.

Did you tell him your name when you called? Any chance the guy that turned up to pick it up said something that made the seller think he was you?
Holding stuff for strangers when you have other interested parties can be a real risk. First there with the cash usually takes it away.

I missed out on a 75 Crown for $200 yesterday. You get over it.

Thanks for the support, guys. Also missed out on the MX63 Cressida in NJ. Hunting for nostalgics in the rust belt, you West Coasters have no idea how good you have it!

I can guarantee that the Zen approach will help.
It has kept me calm and prevented the deaths of at least 3 time wasters which may have caused an international incident and my eventual beheading.
I am therefore able to continue with the car search.
Result :tu:

There's a MX63 on NYC craigslist listed as a 1988 Cressida in the Bronx. Looks clean. Check it out. http://newyork.craigslist.org/que/cto/2461671814.html

Zen approach is the best!
It brought me a Bugeye Starlet, 260Z, KE70 Coupe and a Laurel C30 :)

I wasnt looking for anything but the cars found me!

No i am waiting for Z to get me a nice house with a garage big enough to get 6 cars in it..

I think we should have a seminar on the Zen method of acquiring J-tin! it would certainly help during these long quests for the perfect car

Hey man don't mean to rub salt in an old wound but the guy that bought from under you sold it again in 2 years. My pops was working on his house and bought it from him for something to drive to measure jobs and such. Meanwhile I was in the AF stationed in Korea, when he mention to me he bought an old corolla i could sparsely believe it. Once I got back stateside I bought the car from him, in slightly worse condition from the pictures last owner had. He had hit something with front right fender and bent the hood up. The car is still around in Cali where I am currently stationed, and will be rebuilt as soon as I get the facilitates. the car in the images is def the one I currently own, just want you to know this car is appreciated even if it did get sold out from under you. did you end up getting another classic to fall in love with?
