As a bit of work project we picked up this 1979 MX32 Cressida.
2.6 litre 4M 6 cylinder with a blown head gasket as we found out later.
4 speed manual and airconditioning.
Previous owner chopped rear springs, half the interior removed and what was left was falling apart.
Also, It had spent the last couple of months outside under a gum tree, which meant leaves and crud everywhere, a lot of blobs of sun baked sap, and some fairly oxidised paint.

Image

On the flipside, it had been, until a couple of months ago, road registered, it had only a little suface rust where the paint had been chipped.

Being in the business that I am, the first thing we did was try wheels on it :D

Not bad. Black racing 15"
Image

Nope. Widened Impul R701s.
Image

Now these work! widened Hoshino Racings. 14x8.5 and 9.5-13
Image

Pity they are sold to someone else.

These.
Image

Going to need a bit of work to make them fit, both 14x9 at the moment.

Guards are going to need rolling.

I got to work and removed the 35 year old stripes.
They didn't want to come off. And neither did the leftover double sided tape from the edges of the guards.
They ruined the body lines of the car though.
I'm thinking that by the end of the seventies they wanted to make the car to look more up to date and tried to hide that lovely sloping bodyline and cokebottle hip with stripes that just went straight front to back.
Having them gone brings those lines back and she looks so much better for it.

Image

Then with a lot of elbow grease and a fair bit of work with the guard roller, we shined her up a bit, rolled the inner edge of the guard and gave it a bit of a flare.
I came in the next day to find the tribe had spoken.

And through the miracle of photography....

Turns out number six was blown.
So the head is off to Superflow Heads for a clean up and service and a coil for plug hole #2.

Head back from Superflow with all new valves, guides and a skim to make it flat again.

Image

The old valves have definitely seen better days.
Checkout the grooves

The interesting thing was the owner of the head place was showing his apprentice the quality of the alloy.
He said the new ones are rubbish compared to these.

We find the same thing when polishing alloy wheels.
The older the better.

Cool project. Looks like it will be on the road soon enough.

Those are some nice looking coil overs. I guess you don't have to cut the tubes very straight because the part just goes over the stock tube?

Yes, just slides over the cut body.
Then you drill 3 or 4 holes around new tube, weld the bottom right around and weld through the holes.
That was just a preliminary cut to find out where we needed to be.
All nice and even now :)
Being welded right now.

All welded up.
Just need to put it all back together now.
This is future 31GUNs problem.
