Sanding went much better today, figured out my main problem... Sandpaper grit. Got some 36 grit and things started moving along much quicker (but not as quick as I hoped :P )

I should hope he sees that as a compliment. 8)

I never cared for them until this one either.

Well I never cared much about old 60's/70's Japanese cars until I got into old Subarus, but now I can't help taking pics and oogling over every one I see, LOL!

Just took my engine/heads/etc. to a machine shop.

Basically it looks like it will be cheap to fit the Weber manifold, cheaper than buying another 32/36 carb and running the stock manifold! I just need a better measurement of exactly how much needs to be shaved from the heads...

Just found these on Youtube, figured i'd share them:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGoHp0pU ... re=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Qw7bMO- ... re=related

Thats the weber manifold/carb on there, so its probably a sport motor. I think this is the guy who has a Japanese Blog going about FF-1 builds.

Alright, it looks like I only need about 1/16" or 2mm shaved from each head... Any experts out there think thats manageable? Is there anything else I should be concerned about when doing this?

That sounds alright, just make sure that the pushrods are shortened that much also. Most machine shops can do that very easily by just sticking them in a lathe and just turning the end of the tube down before the tip with a grooving bit and pressing the tip in a lil further.

The head can be shaved down that far easily and cheaply too.

Oh and see if they can redo the combustion chambers too.

I'm not sure there is much room to re-do the combustion chamber. I wouldn't mind it though if the compression went up to 10.0:1 or so.

Do I need upgraded head bolts, or something else to deal with added stresses if I do up the compression?

That is hard to say but for reliability standpoint I would say go with ARP bolts just in case

What about valve springs, spring retainers, the camshaft, and stuff like larger valves and porting and whatnot?

Do I need to do any of that, or just shave it and not worry about that stuff?

being that it is a pushrod engine you will not have any issues unless you are putting a wild cam into it, then I would talk to delta about what to do next for the valvetrain to strengthen it up

As you can see, the weber installs perfectly without headgaskets.

So ya, 2mm is what needs to come off, either by machining or by a thinner headgasket and less machining.

you need to realize also that when you torque down those heads that the gaskets will also compress down by maybe half that, so might want to experiment by sealing the motor with some head gaskets and fitting the manifold

I did realize that, which is why I torqued them down quite a bit with the HG's installed. Also note that these head bolts don't have very high torque numbers (~40ftlbs)

My main problem is doing the measuring while installed. Its hard to tell exactly how much of a gap is there, but i'm pretty sure the difference is going to be metric (and I think some guy in Japan at some point gave me a metric number for the difference between the two shortblocks).

What I know for sure is that whatever headgasket I do use, that needs to be the difference removed.

Ok, just to be sure, I ran another test.

I put a mark using a straight edge on the manifold and left it installed on one of the heads. I then reinstalled the headgaskets and torqued them down to specs. I rechecked the mark and it moved exactly 4mm.

My only concern right now is whether the spark plug clears the piston. Everything else is out of the way.

Oh, and apparently custom headgaskets are not an option... Unless I want to spend several thousands of dollars in re-tooling fees, or deal with some company in Thailand :|

I keep this thread going on three forums... Here, NASIOC, and USMB. Surprisingly different responses from each forum, and all three have helped a ton with this project :)
