I have another ecu coming in about a week, so in the mean time I thought I would check some wiring and stuff.
first thing I found is that my old multi meter is giving false readings.
Image
One of the leads is faulty so tomorrow I'm of to buy a new one (everything is closed today, Easter Saturday)

I have an ECU for an earlier model NICS red rocker cover RB20DET.
All the plugs fit, so I wondered if it would start the car.
Answers no. It won't start the fuel pump.
so I thought I'd better check the current ECU to see if there was anything obvious, and because it look like it got a bit wet at some stage.
Image

Here it is with the cover off
Image

And with the sub board up
Image

Hang on a minute, what's this?
Image
That looks like it could be a chip holder under that chip. I'm no expert on electronics so I don't know

Here is the ECCS and NICS computers side by side
Image

Definitely different, but the question is, is it just an ECCS thing, or an RB20DET-R thing?
Has someone chipped this ECU?

Thinks "have a look on the other side and see if the solder is different".
I have pointed out where the chip is
Image

Looks different to me
Image

Definitely different to the other chips
Image
Looks newer.
Prolly asking the wrong people given the nature of this site  but can anyone tell me if I'm right or not?

So...what you're saying is...electricity goes thru those little squiggly lines?

Really? They look so small....

While I deal with the ignition problem, here is something else to look at.
When I bought this car it came with sundry boxes of crap that have been a bit of trash and treasure.
Some of it is garbage some is gold.
The trick is knowing the difference.
Enjoy

If I was of a different persuasion, I'd say the legs are damn sexy too.
But I'm not.
Not that there's anything wrong with that :D

I think I have found the problem.
The board in the ecu looks like it has seen a bit of heat. Bit hard to see in this pic
Image

Here it is a bit closer
Image

And this is the culprit on the other side
Image

This is it with the retainer plate removed
Image

Question is can it be fixed?
Probably not but things aren't entirely here
Image

........Yet

Damn, I would have never seen that. Are you good a finding Waldo too? :)

The pointing finger is very Monty Python-esque.

Okee dokee, had a bit of success.
Here is an ecu pic.
The one on the left(and plugged in) is the one Seventh Skyline sent me from Tasmania. (many thanks)
The one on the right is Mr Bad Boy
Image

I actually plugged it in and fired her up on Tuesday night and it burst into life on 5 or 6 cylinders. This morning (Saturday) I pulled out the plugs for a look see.
No easy job, they are to be found way down here
Image
under the coil packs. To get to them first you have to remove the strut brace, crossover inlet tube, igniter, valley cover, ignition loom, and coil packs.
At least an hours work.

And here they are, left to right
1 & 2
Image

3 & 4
Image

5 & 6
Image

1 wet and 1 black in all cases.
6 new plugs later, and here is a pic of Fade somewhere other than my garage
Image

:D :D :D
The ecu that is in the car is for a standard RB20DET
So I will either see about getting the RB20DET-R ecu fixed or getting the standard one chipped to run the (much) bigger turbo.
At the very least I would like to put it on the dyno and check that the fuels are safe. Also want to get rid of the 15psi boost cut
I'll be talking to a tuning mob that can do these Eproms later this week.

I'll let the pics do the talking
Image
Image

It did it again, same thing, same freeway! different ecu.
I'll pull out the ecu tomorrow and see if it has fried the same bit.
The plot thickens...

In other news, I took the GTS-R ecu to an tuning mob today and learnt a few things.
1, the fried gizmo is indeed an ignition module.
2, they did not do the rechip in the ecu, it's Japanese.
3, that chip is the one that controls the boost cut.
4, they want $1200 AuD for a chip and tune

Not unless he snuck around when I wasn't here....
Kevin....?
Back to the problem at hand.
It has done exactly the same thing, fried the ignition module.
Image
Image

The ecu has another ignition module on the other side
Image

They both hook up to the top 3 pins on this socket
Image

So the plan is to follow the wire from the plug back and see if I can find a short or whatever else is causing this.
I haven't given up yet, but I'm close to taking it to someone who understands how electicity works.
I will also have to regard that as a personal failure. I can figure out most things but have some sort of mental block when it comes to electrons.

i got a suggestion.. i was thinking why not just get a ecu from another car lets say a car withe the similar setup (like coil packs) like a a 300zxt and open up the ecu and remove the transistor you need from the other less expensive ecu (300zx and weld it to the skyline ecu.. just an idea might work since they both look similar and the internals look the same also its not like your changing out the ROM chip from the ecu... (just a thought)

I thought about that, I have an ecu from a NICS RB20 det with the same modules in it.
At first I thought that the module was the problem.
Now that it has done the same thing to 2 different ecu's, I figure it's something in the wiring that is frying the modules.

oh ok... well if the wiring ends up being ok then it might be a coil pack or what ever the module triggers... if you have the diagram of the wiring we might be able to help you out with your problem..

I don't have a wiring diagram but Lysdexia on the R31club sent me this which is real handy

Pinouts for the ecu :tu:
