What engine:

what combo are you using:

what problems have you had with it:

what would you do differently:

I'm leaning toward the typical Blaster II coil, MSD 6AL, and the pentronix points delete system for the dizzy, but i'm not sure what the part number is for that, on the Zstore they assign thier own part number i think, so thats no help, i have seen it on plenty of sites for much less, but i dont knwo which one would be the best oe to get. anyone tested this out on thier car? i know most L6 guys go with the ZX dizzy for thier upgrade, but it would be much easier for me to get my hands on the kit vs a whole dizzy here in japan, Z parts are super expensive here..

What engine: L28, 11:1 compression, 302deg cam

what combo are you using: MSD 6AL, Blaster3 coil and some sort of late 70's Nissan electronic dizzy (similar to E12-80 from the 280ZX but not quite the same), recurved to 15degs of mechanical advance, all-in by 2700rpm. Base timing 12deg.

what problems have you had with it: none really, it works great.

what would you do differently: I shoulda got the MSD6AL2, which comes with a rev limiter.

L24 - Weber triple 40s - MSD6AL - Blaster SS coil (had laying around) - 280zx dizzy

No complaints, works a whole lot better than stock setup :tu:

Was thinking of getting blaster 3 coil...but not sure if the difference is worth the money/trouble

Hey Kev, i know you had that big auto meter tach right? was that because your tach wasn't working right with your setup?

I'm definitely ordering that pentronix setup, it looks super easy and I've read that its very reliable,
getting a 6AL, and probably the blaster II i guess?

its hard to find good into on this stuff installed on anything BUT an L28 lol
WHICH i guess will be good since i plan to swap in an L28 when i get back to the USA..

Yes, the stock tach wasn't working with the electronic dizzy anyway, so it was easier to wire up the Autometer tach to the electronic ignition, than to try to work out how to get the stock tach to work.

As for the coil, I recall reading the packaging of the various MSD coils and some were recommended for use with points and some for electronic ignition. I went with the Blaster3 as a result, so I think you have to match the coil with the dizzy setup.

You know, I still got that Kameari setup lying around, right? :D

i tried to win one of those on the auctions a few months back, a little too rick for my wallet, its a shame that its just wasting away though :( why did you choose to not run that setup? i remember you were having a lot of problems with it, but i dont remember what was causing it. i should re-read your build thread.. i wish someone would make the whole thing a PDF file LOL i would keep it on my iPad!

Well the kameari setup confused the heck out of us all for a while, because it wouldn't advance with rpm. It wasn't until I sent an email to Kameari, that it was explained that the racign distributor kit has fixed timing. So what you set as base timing, is what you get at max rpm. Kameari said that this is just fine and dandy for a road car, and for the short time that I had it installed, they seemed to be right. The current distributor dumps in all its advance by 2700rpm anyway, so it doesn't spend much time at below max advance.

But my engine builder felt that having 25 degrees of static timing it idle would put too much strain on the starter motor, because my motor has 11:1 compression and is a big 3L (basically retarded timing makes it easier to start). So we ended up going with a modified version of the ignition setup my engine came with...essentially over concerns about starting.

As for whether it'll work on your 2L with stock comp, well I guess it would be easier to start. There is only one way to find out though

I've been thinking about what to do on my L20 as well. The pertronix looks nice for the money. The Kameari setup looks really cool and beautifully made, but definitely is pretty expensive. Fixed timing throughout the rpm range doesn't sound ideal, either. Still, if one of you guys ends up running it, I'd love to hear some feedback.

Kev, do you know if that kameari setup needs an aftermarket coil?

No idea. I used it with both the Nissan and the MSD coils and it seemed to work just fine either way.

Oh yes, you still install it with the coil, then you have this module thing which goes on the side of the engine bay, and some wires go to the dizzy.
