I feel guilt every time I see a low mile piece of j-tin. This time I had to buy since it was just 30 minutes from my house in Seattle.

Nice '78 Datsun 810 wagon sans wood grain. 60k survivor from an estate. Owner bought it new in 78 for his wife, now I can enjoy it.

Auto, A/C (in op), CB radio, dual power mirrors, plaid seats and everything on this car is super clean. Needs lots of love just from sitting SO long. Last really driven 5 years ago. Runs and drives now but going to go through it to make sure everything is back to original.

I pick up the car tomorrow morning.

That's amazing! So you're planning on keeping it original, then?

Had the car flat-bedded home today and pulled it into the garage... And pulled out the CB radio screwed to the console

Going through the car to make sure everything is good before I start it again.

Here is what I found:
Spark plugs are barely finger tight
Rotor and cap are super old
Oil filter & oil was last replaced in May of 2007!!!
Gas filter has clamps that are also finger tight
Radiator leaks.

Not going to even start the car until everything is in order THEN I will see what else it needs.

It will be back to original in no time.

I noticed that all 4 headlights are still the original Koito's.

Image
All the wood gain is original, but the right front fender looks like different wood grain. Maybe it was damaged in shipping in 1978?

Image
Spark pluds were finger tight but super rusted.
Image

Oil filter has the date May of 2007!
Image
Air box has the filter tag taped to it.
Image
Vin plate shows the horsepower at 154, not bad for the year.

I'm a purist and love to get it back to original... Or as original as possible.

On your blog entry you wrote:

“…Information center shows when the headlights, tailights and break lights are on... these aren't the kind of lights that show you what has burned out…”

Not correct. Yes, the warning lamps will illuminate when the corresponding light is turned on. However, if the warning lamp does not come on then you do indeed have a burned out bulb.

For the front headlights both the high and low beam bulbs on one side must be burned out before the HEAD warning lamp will go out.

This function is mentioned in your owner’s manual and the factory service manual. Sensor modules are used to sense the light current and to provide the warning lamp illumination voltage.

A very nice feature considering this was designed for a 1977 (pre-microprocessor) vintage vehicle.

I figured as much when turned on the lights and the green indicator lights came on one at a time. I was hoping that they would light up red if the lights burned out but figured out that they just don't light up.

Bought an owners manual on bay today to get a grip on all this technology. Amazing for a 78!

Thanks zcarnut for the light update. Bought an owners manual on ebay to have it handy.

It has a battery light that shows in the owners manual that it is for the water level of the battery and it is on. There is a light for charging separate from the battery light. So how does this hook up to the battery? Some one put in a new battery when the car went up for sale and there is a red lead coming out of the wiring harness that hooks to nothing....

as fot the batt thing dont worry about it its not important i have the wiering diagram as a jpeg if u want it... you can try ground it or puting it to 12v+ and see if it goes out or just take the bulb out... cuz that sensor goes plugged into to the batt on the maintenance type batteries ...

You have to connect the sensor wire to 12V to retain the BATTERY warning lamp function. Use a fuse and a resistor in series with the sensor lead to prevent fires.

Nissan service bulletin #TS79-022 covers this issue:
