alright we have officially been accepted to the thunderhill race in may!

here's the stuff from the email.

Good news--I think. Your team has officially been ACCEPTED for LeMons at Thunderhill (aka Goin' for Broken) on 8-9 May 2010. Here's what you need to do now:

A: Read this email completely.

B: Forward it to the rest of your team, one of whom is certainly smarter than you are. (You agreed to be captain, so clearly you're not the genius.)

C: Finish your app data. If you left anything blank in your application, you'll now see a big red INCOMPLETE on your Home page. Fix it.

Got all that? Good--'cause there's more:

1) DOWNLOAD THE UPDATED LeMONS TECH SHEET
It's at http://www.24HoursofLeMons.com/LMTechV4.pdf. Download this now, read the instructions, and bring the completed sheet with you to the track. (Remember, not every rule is reflected on the tech sheet: You still need to study the full LeMons Rulebook.)

2) READ THESE MORE-OR-LESS USEFUL NOTICES

EVENT SCHEDULE
Friday, 7 May 2010
6am: Gates Open:
9am-4pm Thunderhill-Organized Track Testing (details below)
noon-5pm: Mandatory Friday Tech Inspection (every car and at least one driver per team MUST be present for Tech Inspection on Friday--no Saturday Tech will be offered!)

Saturday, 8 May 2010
6am Gates Open
8:00am Drivers' Meeting (Mandatory)
9am-dusk (appx 6pm): Race Session I

Sunday, 9 May 2010
8:30am: Drivers' Meeting (Mandatory)
9am-5pm: Race Session II
noon: People's Curse
5pm: Checkered Flag
5:30pm: Awards
7pm: Gates Close

Pre-Race Track Testing:Thunderhill will be holding a Friday test day for LeMons cars. They're charging $200 for one car and driver, plus $50 for each additional driver. Contact Colleen Worthington at the track (530-934-5588 x100 or colleen@thunderhill.com) for more info or to pre-register.

OVERNIGHT CAMPING: Paddock camping is welcome. Power hookups (there are plenty, don't get your knickers twisted) are first-come, first-served.

MOTELS, DIRECTIONS, ETC: Check out the Goin' for Broken Event Page and come back often--when we learn something new, we'll update it here.

PARTICIPANT-DISCOUNT SAFETY GEAR: Thanks to event-sponsor Pyrotect, everything an individual needs to pass driver tech (full-face SA2005 helmet plus SFI-rated driving suit, undies, gloves, and shoes) can be bought in one box at a LeMons-only discount: $425 for the bundle. All the gear has been pre-approved--just put it on and go.

Pyrotect also offers discounted LeMons rates on neck braces (at least one is required per team--this isn't part of the bundle); SFI five-point belts; and stand-alone SA2005 helmets. Remember, to get the subsidized LeMons rates, you've got to order online via the LeMons-rate ordering page.

NOISE LIMIT: Maximum allowable noise level is 92dB @ 50 feet. In other words, street-legal mufflers are mandatory--no straight-pipes or hollowed-out race junk allowed. Noisy cars will be black-flagged.

RACE #s: Now that your team has been accepted, a pulldown menu of car #s is visible on the Edit Car Info page of your online registration. If the number you want isn't shown, somebody else already has it. Pick another one. Numbers should be displayed on both sides of the car plus the hood or roof.

COMP LICENSES: Every driver needs a LeMons competition membership. Memberships cost $50 and are good for one year from date of purchase. We are no longer recognizing other series' comp licenses, due to unbelievably excessive whining. Blame the BMW CCA and PCA Club member in the pit space next door. No, seriously, kick his butt. He just cost you 50 bucks.

ROSTER CHANGES: For now, it's still okay to make updates and changes to your online registration. If the changes affect your entry fees, the total will update itself automatically. About a week before the race we'll lock down the database, after which no more additions or changes are possible. We'll give you a few days' warning before that happens, but once it's gone, it's gone.

RULES: THE LeMONS RULEBOOK HAS BEEN UPDATED! Read the complete Rulebook at http://www.24HoursofLeMons.com/rules/ now and re-check it often, refreshing your browser each time. Pay special attention to the strikeout copies linked at the top of the page: It's your responsibility to know the latest version of all posted rules going into the race.

DROPOUTS: When you enter a race, you're buying the right to compete--not a guarantee from us that you'll get your own act together. If you drop out, can't finish your car, blow up, go broke, catch swine flu, step on your own wiener, or otherwise fail to avail yourself of your grid spot, you forfeit your entry fees. That's why they're called "entry" fees, not "I got to drive the whole race" fees.

3) PAY UP BY SATURDAY, MARCH 13th 2010
Speaking of entry fees, they're due now. All entry fees must be paid in full by Saturday, 13 March 2010! Miss that deadline, and your spot may be given to the next team on the waitlist. Need to beg an extension? Please drop us an email before the due date.

Your total fees are shown on your registration Home page--assuming you filled out the driver, crew, camping, license, and transponder info correctly. If there's a big red INCOMPLETE at the top of your Home page, you've screwed something up, and that might affect your fee total. So...um...fix it.

To pay online by credit card or PayPal, use the Pay Now button at the bottom of your registration Home page.

To cough up by check or money order, make payable to "24 Hours of LeMons" and mail to: 24 Hours of LeMons, 5675-C Horton Street, Emeryville CA 94608.

Welcome aboard, hope we'll be seeing you there! Cheers &c--JL

tore our block down. plan on running the old block that came with the car and the new head got with the new motor purchase. we are getting the block decked so we can run a 3 layer metal headgasket, since the fel-pro ones always fail on these motors. this block had a low spot between 2 and 3, right where the head gasket blew. block needs to be super smooth for the new gasket to seal though.
Image
smashed oil pan. good thing we have a replacement
Image
gooey sludgy internals
Image
everything out and marked. hopefully we stop losing stuff though
Image
100% bare block. will be at the machine shop today

got our manifold done and should be back today. rebuild starts as soon as the block is done. hopefully the car is running by next weekend.

things to do:
clean engine bay
clean and dryice interior
weld in cage
mount seat and harness
paint chassis
sort out suspension

things left to buy:
oil cooler lines
sticky tires
misc engine bits and seals

small update while at a round table pizza here, saturday night. First off if you get a chance run one of these, out of a fucked up complication I'm not even able to drive but goddamn this rocks so much and I'm having a lot of fun.

This is the car as of friday night around sunset, we painted it soon after and they turned the lights off on us when we just barely started.
Image

Now thursday we wake up to a car still not running, planning to leave that night at 12 and get to the track noon friday. people were a little scared to drive out and get fucked because we had a really odd electrical issues. We come out anyway, get here friday, wade around a bit not knowing what to do then bam, at some point it seems 20 guys just swarm the car. Take over what ever we were doing, and fix it. Huge thanks go to stick figure racing goddamn they helped out, eventually after I don't know how many hours they ran us through the car to fix all the computer stuffs, fix every little tech thing, random parts were found on the car after the swarm was finished and we have no idea where they came from. New battery, new exhaust, random everything and the car runs beautifully. The amount of help is amazing here and the people rock. Anyway updates tomorrow or whenever we get home, we still had an oil pan leak most of saturday but by the end of the day we bumped up a few spots and the turbo started working and we are actually in a pretty fast car.

Alright here's a few pictures of the car after we painted it in the darkness. We woke up sunday expecting a few small things but we had some major issues that we could not fix at the track. Oil pressure was so high it was popping the oil filters apart and then gushing oil all over. The regulator is stuck open or something, we will see if there's any damage hopefully not though, after that hopefully the car is good to go for a full event next time. Everybody is amazing at these events and no matter what happens they still look at you like "FARK that lets put jb weld on it" but there's a point where we want to keep what we just built up running properly. The paint was an attempt at a mitsubishi zero from WWII, but again this was in pitch black darkness right after they turned the lights off, even better.

The theme was weak, i would like to go back with something a lot better next time. I would love to do an all out bosozoku or something. Here's some of the other crazy stuff that was out there.

Huge thanks to stick figure racing, they were the main force behind getting the car running friday, we couldn't have done it without them at all.
Image

Thank you Mark for the amazing job on the cage, people were really amazed at the quality welds and everything. I didn't know anything about it so I guess I had no idea but everyone seemed impressed.
Thank you Matt for letting us use your trailer, it was a long one but it worked so well for us.
Thanks to our biggest competition of the weekend, forgot their team name but they had a black mustang #338, they did so much welding and put up with our terribly messy pit as well as let us borrow any grinder, welder, or torch that we may have needed.

Nice. I was wondering what happened to this. We started building a ChumpCar Starion, but it's currently on hold.

What cage did you use??

What did you do to fix your oil pressure issue??

What would you do different for next year??

broke dick cage. their website is something like bdracing

oil pressure issue is still there, going to tear into it this weekend and figure out whats up

things to change would be get it prepped sooner and use the cool down lap/dont shut it off immediately after the race is over.
while the gigantic nissan s14 radiator kept the water temps in the high 180* range, the oil must have gotten quite hot. very last lap of the day, the turbo started to squeal when the boost came on. only thing we could figure is that the oil was too hot. also pinning that thought on the failed oil pressure regulator.

Very cool read. I know I had read about this vehicle before, just can't remember which forum.

I need to look into trying to participate in one of these one day.

were you running a air filter? Most turbos I hear squeal are inhail related.

You may want to look into a MONTERO SR oil cooler. They are at least 2x a starion and should bolt in. Only the sr model of the second gen montero will have it though.

You guys need to work on that paint job,m that thing looks horrible!
