 Post subject: Quick Colt engine question

Is there significant differences between a 4G32 (1.6) and a G32B (1.6 engine? In particular years from 1979-1984/ Non turbo. These were in both the front wheel drive and the rear wheel drive Colts/Champs.

I'm looking for rebuild parts and I find mostly G32B stuff, but it all appears to be the same as the 4G32. I'm confused.

There might be a cylinder head difference. I'm not sure what year they changed the water port on the intake side of the head. I have something like a 1986 colt turbo intake and the water port on it is MUCH larger than the 78 lancer belt driven head I have. THey wont interchange unless oyu build some kind of sandwich plate to block the water port portion that is

Here is your differences from the early belt driven heads to the later heads that were on the turbo models and then also the 4g37 engine. I took a lot of pictures so you can get an idea.

The 4G32 has a chain driven camshaft with the distributor in the timing case.
The 4G32B has a belt driven camshaft with the dizzy mounted in the head.

The 4G32 was RWD only and used by Mitsubishi till 76-77 depending on the country delivered to. Hyundai continued use of the chain driven engine till the late 80s.

The 4G32B was available in both RWD, FWD and FWD turbo versions.

Pistons rods and bearings interchange between chain and belt versions, not much else.

Oh it gets more confusing! LOL

Where would I be able to get one of those blanking plates to block the fuel pump opening? Also, why are oil pumps so hard to locate for these engines?

(I thought the Hyundai was a 1.5 with a belt driven cam in the 80s.)

The Starion has a factory fuel pump blockoff as well as a few other models. Otherwise you make one or have one made for you.

The oil pumps rarely go bad on them but they are on the market. I have not looked about for on from a belty.

The Hyundai I refer to is the Pony which was a RWD car that was not in the USA market.

Actually the starion block off will ont work on the g32b. It uses a 3 bolt pump in a weird shape instead of the 2 bolt.

You can get a block off plate off a 4g37 eclipse engine though.

Here is a pic. g32b from a 1978 up top and the 4g37 eclipse head on the bottom. Notice the block off plate for the fuel pump.

Ahh good correction Shaun, I was thinking G32 since they have the 2bolt style.

yeah, I was pretty confused when I was trying to find a replacement fuel pump. The parts stores were getting me the 2 bolt ones.

I really appreciate your help, advice and pics! I'm a true vintage Subaru enthusiast and know those cars inside and out. Alot of that knowledge applies with this Colt, but not all as I am finding out!

I had a 1980 Colt RS back in the day and I loved it. It was the 1st "non Subaru" I had. I drove that car everywhere and ended up trading it for another Subaru for some strange reason. I should have kept it!

Last year I found nearly the same car, (not an RS), but a Colt Custom. Same 1.6, twin stick, FWD and same interior as my old car. I set about to restore it. Parts have been a challenge, but I have been able to find and even stockpile many needed items. It's a really sweet stock, unmolested car.

Of course, all the insider knowledge on Mitsubishi, I am missing...(unlike the Subarus). At any rate, I love this Colt and it looks just fine with all of Subys!

Has anyone ever used the Jet valve eliminator Bolts?

Those first FWD Colt were fun little cars. I spent some time with an 84 turbo version. Great in the hills with the torque and twin sticks.
I myself just play with the RWD cars, well other than my AWD turbo conversions.

That bolt set for eliminating the jets is no better than just swapping exhaust rockers to the intake side and leaving the valves in. You are best to get the steel jet cup out of the combustion chamber. This is either done by welding them closed, Big PIA. I prefer to do a cold repair by having aluminum plugs machined that press in and have an 8mm bolt retain them from the top. I machine the plug so there is enough material to blend flush in the chamber.

I never knew you could swap the exhaust side over. I usually just cut the jet valve rocker portion off the intake side and leave it be.I never understood why they made the plugs steel instead of aluminum.

The original jet inserts were steel just to deal with the heat since they protrude into the chamber. But if they are not in use they should be removed so they are not a hot spot to cause detonation.

More questions from the Subaru guy!

Is the belt driven camshaft on the G32B, the same from 79 on up?
I know some of the earlier cams have a piece that slides over a key at the pulley, but the later cams are all one piece. Will they interchange

Anybody care to sell me a complete set of good rocker arms?

G32B 1.6 Belt cam 1979 COLT FWD


What years/models might have the same rockers?

Much appreciated!
