Wanting to know if anyone has or good recommendations for an engine swap, have an 83 Dodge Challenger 2.6 5spdMT, conrod went through the block :( anyhow, long story short, to get a used engine and rebuild it is looking almost the same as doing an engine swap, from what i've heard theres two engines 4g63 and 4g64, which one of these is considered the wideblock that would bolt up to the tranny though? from what i've heard from Starion owners is the 4g64 bolts to theirs, but their tranny is the narrow tranny? just trying to get the most information regarding this before I make a decision. as to which engine would be the best prospect to persue as there aren't many 2.6's left around here, actually none at all, not even caravan 2.6's.... however JDM engines readily availible, any help guys would be awsome.

In Australia, the wideblock 4G63/64's come from rear drive applications and the narrow comes from front drive. So all you need to do is work out which one you need and source where the motor you're buying comes from. Did the 4G64 come out in rear config? I'm not sure? Hope this helps.. also google 4G6x you'll find some interesting info with that search.

Good luck...

well, you will be in the same boat as we are with the narrow block 4g63, most everything you got in canada is narrow. You should have a 5 speed wideblock, so you are most likely either going to use a 4g64 truck engine, with either sohc fuel injection, or convert to a twin cam setup. Either way you will need a 88-91ish 6 bolt truck engine, or 86-90 mitsu van engine if you want a wideblock.

I guess it depends on what kind of power you are looking to get out of it. I did a turbo g54b starion swap into my 81 challenger a while back and that thing was a rocket. I'd say tell us what you want out of it. Nothing other than a jdm starion or usdm starion engine is a real bolt in upgrade without doing some custom swapping.

Measure your two bottom bolts hole spacing on the tranny or block, the big bolts. Narrow block should be 12 1/4" or so, and wideblock should be 13 1/4".

If you have a narrow block, go with any 89-94 4g63 engine.

If you have a wide block, go with a 4g64 pre 94.

Starion tranny is a wide block tranny.

Yea the biggest problem is the lack of G54B's in canada, anything that has them is likely a Dodge D50 with a 2.6 that has like 900,000km's on it, any anyone that even has a core engine is like 700bucks. just to rebuild, where you can get a full JDM for 700bucks (no tranny) thats why i'm debating, I'd like to keep the 2.6 but finding one thats decent and then one that the wrecking yard isn't going to rip you off is the other.

I appreciate all of your guys help on the matter, has anyone swapp in a 4g64, I know that alot of guys put them in their starion's with a 63 head, just wondering if anyone's put one in a Sapporo or a Challenger? thanks Guys.

its been done. Nothign wrong with it. I'm assuming you are talking twin cam? Need forged pistons, but otherwise you should be good.just make sure you get a 6 bolt 4g64 which is the earlier block.

Hey man, tell us more info, what is wrong with the motor?

Why does it need a rebuild?

What do you want to do with it??

If there is only a couple of hundred dollar difference between a complete rebuild of the motor you already have in there,
and buying Another 2nd hand motor, that might end up having the exact same problems within 10,000Ks...

i know which one id do...

just a thought

Haha... technically, it IS rebuildable, with the new crank case window.

Oh yea, Block is done >.<

However, it's looking like putting a 4G64 2.4L in it maybe the ticket so far, just upgrading to fuel injection and the new harness will be the hard part, then hopefully can do a headswap and turbo it later on.

There's rumors of someone using 4G63 Exhaust manifold and sensors to turbo the 64? anyone heard of that?
