You've got your work cut out for you, but what a tremendous score! Looks to be in pretty good shape, overall. Love the color. Very cool! :tu: :D

okay guys so i have a begun a little wish list of things im going to need, obviously i need to start on her first but at least if i get some feelers out there on the things i know i need at the moment then if something pops up i can at least collect it for when it's needed and not miss out on the opportunity!

Centre console (where radio slots into) mine has been cut to fit a new head unit :? but as i want to put an original radio in i'm going to need one that isn't!
Original radio
pair of JDM bullet style fender mirrors (JDM Murakami Bullet Type Fender Mirrors???)
set of original wheels
wheel centre caps (i am only missing 1 but obviously if theres a full set :P )
"galant" badge for drivers side rear quarter (will post a pic of the other one for matching when i get chance)

i could possibly do with a great condition front bumper as mine is kind of battered and bruised and i dont know if its repairable this is a maybe item but if the right one pops up!

I've spoke to affa, and he's told me he's got some gto stuff in, but obviously if anyone else can help me out here i would be eternally grateful!
i also have a few bits and bobs i might not need and i now i can source some other components i wont need so if you need something just give me a shout and ill see what i can do :D

Vinyl roof is going, or should I say gone! Not stock so it came off! Good job as well as it produced a nasty but important find! Need a lot of work on the roof!

Better to lose the vinyl roof. I think the car will look better and vinyl roofs always seem to just generate problems - as it sounds like you've found out.

Glad to hear that things are coming along well. Anxious to see current photos of your restoration. Such a cool little car! :tu: :D

It sure looked look like an O.E. piece.
Had the pillar trim and 2 flat seams.

Your seeing more than 30 years of use and age under there
with a lot less care than you are going to be giving it. :tu:

ok guys so heres a mass of pics to get your teeth into:
here she is tucked up in bed with her brothers and sisters

and the work began with a full interior strip out

then removal of external trim and accessories

the vinyl roof was off at this point aswell but ill come to that in a bit, so then came removal of front end material such as the grill, radiator, lights, wings, basically to give me an idea of rust damage:

got myself some bits and bobs in passing time, I managed to get a full lock set, barrel and matching key and my favourite find so far..........an original stock radio:

There were more photos but buckets put them at higher pixels than allowed apparently! Bloody thing! Anyway, that's that and now to shoe you the nasty bit.........THE ROOF!!!!!

Ok so the roof, whew where do I begin! Well I suppose vinyl removal Is probably the best place! So........after I stripped the vinyl off (and bearing in mind this is the first thing I've EVER had to do with cars) I noticed a load of cracking on the roof and I had no idea what this was, after some discussions it was agreed that it was filler, and after further discussions it was agreed that having filler under a vinyl roof was normal (I didn't know this), basically this is what it looked like:
Image
Image
so I start chipping away at this filler and was dumbfounded by what I got, to start with, the filler in its thickest part was over an inch thick I have a photo but won't let me post it
then what was underneath the filler nearly brought me to tears:
Image
Image
What you see spreads all across the roof, its covered in what looks to be surface rust but there's gashes and gouges all dug into the metal, it looks like its been on its roof at some point, and then rather then treat the problem they've just masked over it with the filler and left it to corrode under there!

So firearrow is correct with it generating more problems

And I just gotta figure out what care I heave to give it whit! Looks like a lot more than I bargained for!

Still its better to find out now than further down the line! As I stand currently the roof hasn't been touched, im in the process of labelling up the wires so I can drop the engine out, i'll be putting that to one side whilst I focus on the bodywork, keep to one thing at a time! Once engines out shes off for a shotblasting session :)

Wow Jay, it's waaaaaaay worse than I thought it might look - in fact, it's the worst one I've ever seen after the vinyl has been pulled up. (they are nostalgic, but I HATE vinyl roofs!!!!)

You're just going to have to remove every bit of the rust that's up there (I would either sandblast it or have the whole car dipped) and then fill it and block it again. Big job, but it can be done -- and you knew this wasn't going to be a "walk in the park" going into the project, anyway.

She's a diamond in the rough. Your hard work will pay off & she's going to be AWESOME someday. I'm pulling hard for you and can't wait to see it finished. Keep the faith! :tu:

And incidentally, ALL cars have/use filler - even brand new ones. It is nothing to be ashamed of and now, especially with the modern fillers that are available, one can really do some beautiful work without the hassles/problems that were associated with the older products. "Filler is our friend!"

Great looking car. Should be awesome when it's finished. That hood really is ugly. Makes you wonder what happened to it in the past.

Either way, the end result will be good. Keep up the good work, and I love your collection.
