I am looking for a spare rear axle for the Fire Arrow. That is leaf springs, rear disc brakes and larger housing/components that were part of the Fire Arrow package here in the US.

Anyone know if the Sapporo/Challenger coil spring rear axle (or at least the center section and axles) are the same or can interchange with out too much problem on the Fire Arrow?

I am ultimately looking for a spare Fire Arrow rear axle, and not turning up any leads. So plan B is to find something else that will fit.

Any suggestions?

I still need a Fire Arrow or possibly the Challenger/
Sapporo differential - I have the limited slip ready to install.

Anyone know this is an exact exchange or have experience with this?

I'm using a 1974 mazda 929 housing with 13B RX4 28 spline axles and RX7 LSD with 28 spline side gears fitted in my 79 Lancer (what we call them in Australia).

The only drama is that the are 4 inches (100mm) wider than the standard housing. You will have the same problem if you use the sapporo/challenger/scorpion (australia again). This can be fixed with the correct offset wheels or fender flares. Having said that, they benifit greatly from the improved rear wheel track provided by this set up.

I have used the sapporo set up in earlier Lancers I have built, but went down the mazda route this time, as LSD's are readily available compared to the mitsubishi ones here in Australia

Steve,
All the internals of those two axles will interchange. It is just the brackets on the housing that differ.

Charlie, thanks for the tip, I will get on it right away! BTW, I welded a diff together for Sno Drift this year and it worked great. Will use in the meantime on gravel, but would like to find some different rear ratios.

Plenty of ratios available, look at the front diff of the '80s vintage 4cyl Montero and Mighty Max - D50s. They will offer you 3.90, 4.22, 4.62 and should you want a 4.88 ratio.
