Hey guys,
After a year long dip in the Datsun world I am now the proud owner of a white 74 Mazda RX-4 hardtop coupe. Yesterday I took the day off,and traveled to Long Island NY with Brad(TSiSS350 on this forum) via the New London ferry in his really nice GTI. It was a first for Brad as he had never been on a boat with his car.
We missed the 8am ferry by about two minutes,and had to wait for the 9am ferry. It took roughly 1hr,and 25 mins on the ferry. We had about an hour drive from the ferry departure to where the seller had the car. It was a nice drive through Long Island's North Fork wine country even with the small splashes of rain on the windshield from time to time. Very rural with lots of cool things to see on the side of the roadway including one 1st gen RX-7,and maybe thirty-five 50's era American trucks used for farming.
We arrived,and I had Brad look the car over so I had a second opinion,as I looked at the car a few weeks back by myself,and thought it was in good overall shape. We then loaded up a spare GSL-SE 13B engine the seller was letting go with the sale into the surprisingly large rear section of Brad's GTI.
The money exchanged hands,as did the title,and shortly there after I was attaching my plates to the car,ad we were off to make the ferry back home. Brad lead the way with his GPS, and we were trying to make the 2pm ferry back,but again missed it by about two minutes. So we had an hour wait for the next ferry. By now it was much colder,and the rain was coming at a more steady pace,but nothing too alarming. While in line we were next to a very sweet BMW with a Dinan package,and a set of brakes that Brad could tell you what brand,looked to be larger than the wheels on my new ride. Also the brakes probably cost more than my car as well.
When we arrived at New London,CT it was about a two hour trip in the early evening twilight back to my house. About 20 or so minutes from home I pulled over in a rest area/weigh station on the highway,and had Brad drive the car the rest if the way home so he could have the experience of a 35 year old Mazda with a crappy exhaust. I think he liked it,but who knows really. I can say his GTI was way nicer to drive than the RX-4,but I knew that going into it.
Remarkably we both forgot our cameras at home,but Brad did get some pics on his Google phone,and later he will post up some pics. I hope you enjoy.
All in all it was fun trip,and I am glad we did it that way instead of the other route which had me trailering the car home, which would have been smarter,but not so adventurous.
This now brings my collection to three vintage Mazda rotaries. Some would say I have a problem,and really I can't argue with them.
