Nice 7. when I was younger my brother and his mates were into rotaries, so have always liked them.


where were those photos taken... not far from Appollo Bay as you go up through the mountains?

Random SA22C trivia: Has anyone noticed the Jap-spec Savanna RX-7s only have one front fender badge, on the passenger side?

Not sure where Apollo bay is, this is the road to Walhalla in Gippsland.

Hey Orion, the blue on was in W.A., then got sold and ended up here in
Victoria but has just changed hands again and is now in N.S.W.
It,s a GT, imported into the country by the same company that brought
mine in. At the time of that photo we believe there was only the two in W.A. The company that imported them was (no longer trading) called
the Rotary shop, which was owned by Kim Ledger (Heaths dad) himself
a Rotary enthusiast. He was actually going to convert mine into a Targa
rally car but sold it to me instead.

Hi all.

I am the new owner of the blue RX7 GT. I bought it from Padgett in Victoria and its resting in the garage well preserved! Thanks for giving me some history to the car. I have gone back to s3 rims to keep it factory. Here are a couple of shots with the new wheels, will get some more soon...

Gotta love the "oh shit handles" for the feet, Fairlady's got em too. I'm looking at buying an 82 rx-7 right now. I've been pretty dedicated to Nissan thus far, however the rotary bug is creeping into my heart and it's pics like these that bring it on even more.

the Series 3 turbo is a fascinating car, the 'fabled lost child' of the entire range. Folks talk about it like it doesn't exist, even the engine is a mystery to most people, and I guess this is because it was never originally sold in any overseas markets. I wonder why upper management at Mazda thought the 12A rotary turbo would never sell big in America?

eskimo/coupe3: don't suppose you guys would know how many S3 turbos there are in Australia? I can count 4 or 5 road-legal examples in NZ that I know of.

I been lead to believe theres only 8-10 genuine turbo S111's in Australia
but in the time I've had mine I have only seen three, Mine, Dave's and
this one which was one of I think 3-4 brought in by DMRH in Sydney

There was also this one for sale in Perth many years ago, it was for sale at an up market caryard called the Toy shop, but apart from this poor quality picture taken from an old carsales mag I'm unsure what happened to it, pretty impressive looking car though.

Apart from these I haven't seen any others, a guy a little while ago
was trying to sell a rolling shell on the Ausrotary site, but with no pics
was unable to confirm.
Another guy was trying to sell one a year or two ago in Queensland but
as it had an Aussie rear end (number plate between lights, etc) I can
only assume it wasn't genuine.
There was also a member of the Perth rotary site claiming on RX7.com
(an American site) that his was a Gen Turbo a couple of years back but
he was clearly full of B/S.

As far as I can tell all Genuine 12AT's have a VIN SA22C 301xxx, though I'm not sure if JDM non turbo S111's also start with 301 or what the parameter of the JDM S111 VIN is, I.E. could be 300xxx to 302xxx.
Any info anyone has or can find out about this would be of interest.

My S3 RX-7 has the VIN SA22C-302xxx, first registered in Japan 1985.4 (April).

there is a "notorious" VIN for a genuine S3 turbo floating around various rotary forums that people have been using to inquire about parts, which also begins with 302xxx. I believe it was from this car which was ultimately stripped for parts.


having dealt with Japanese Mazda chassis codes extensively in the past, it seems that every major 'facelift' or revision increments the leading digit on the VIN (and not necessarily to the next number, I've seen VINs jump from 1 to 5 to 7 between revisions)

Series 1 = SA22C-1xxxxx
Series 2 = SA22C-2xxxxx
Series 3 = SA22C-3xxxxx

Mazda VINs also don't take into account the engine type or trim level, just the vehicle frame in production order. So the next car after yours on the assembly line might have been a 6PI SE-Ltd model.

Does yours have power windows as mine does not. I was lead to believe that only the GTX came with that option? Mind you I have never used such pristine window winders in a first gen!!

Unusual as power steer and everything else it come with you would imagine this would be standard spec...

Thanks for the VIN info Orion, all good to know.

Heres a period brocure for the S111 Dave, it shows the three levels
available but the options list is a little hard to read.
I believe the top spec LTD had leather interior and premium sound.
There is other info to be found on the web but can take some searching.
