I lusted after a 4WD turbo TX-3 for years while I got around in a base model 5 door KE laser. That poor thing copped a hiding, got it airborn a few times with about half a dozen people on board etc.

Great cars, just a bit fragile gearbox wise.

Mate I have an 87 TX3 4WD turbo (red over gray). Very similar look to yours but the round head lights. What is this LSD you have?? Where you find that?? You know I have heard of straight cut gear sets with dog engagment for these rally guys used them, dont know where you get them from though, not to mention about $8000aus new

Current old school Jap rides: 1974 Mazda 1300 4 door (in middle of rotary conversion), 1973 Mazda 808/RX3 coupe (still has piston motor but RX3 body bits, lights, nose cone etc).

Yup, I do all of my own photography, it's a great companion hobby.


Australia and NZ never received the KC Laser in turbo guise, only the KE (twin headlight version like yours) which always intrigued me - typical Japanese keeping the best for themselves.

The rear viscous LSD is somewhat easier to find than you'd think. It originally came on the facelift BFMR Familia GT-Ae between 1987-89 (also known as the "rare-as-rocking-horse-shit lightweight rally version") but then from 1989-94 Mazda decided to use it on the BG8Z/BG8R Familia GT-X as standard equipment. Mazdaspeed also listed it in their parts catalogue for a few years.

I got a price on those Cusco strut top mounts today. 18,500 yen for a pair, which after shipping and other rubbish is going to work out to around NZ$400. a bit on the pricey side but it has to be done otherwise I'll be chewing out front tyres at an alarming rate, and RE001s aren't cheap. Pity Whiteline no longer manufacture adjustable strut tops for the TX3s/Familias, they would have been a cost effective alternative.

also I swear the exhaust never used to be this loud and droney, or maybe I'm just getting old and cranky. time to replace one of the resonators with a decent muffler

Replaced the rear muffler with a proper chambered-and-baffled system, and wow what a difference it's made at highway speeds. No longer drones and you can actually hold a conversation with the person next to you.

can also now hear how whiney the rear diff and gearbox are

Found a pair of front seats at long last, so will pick them up and install this week.

Just the Cusco mounts left now...

Incidentally, a friend worked at FoMoCo in the 1980s and was responsible for the localization program of that 626 into a Telstar. Considered for the same segment at the time was the first Sierra. See ya! Neko.

Really? I would've liked to have been a fly on the wall during those years.

One thing I found incredibly odd was the decision not to export some of the more performance-oriented versions overseas at the first instance. i.e. cars like my TX3 with the DOHC turbo engine and 4WD, or even the Telstars with the 2 litre "Magnum" turbo. Wonder if that was Japanese intervention (saving the best for themselves) or foreigners thinking the technology was too fragile.

I mean, the Americans were scared of the 12A turbo rotary engines grenading and possibly compromising the image of reliability, which is why no export market ever received them.
