I have a 1984 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE with a clogged charcoal canister. Has anyone ever tried to rebuild one of these?

It is metal painted black with a pressed on yellow zinc plated lid.

All 81-85 Mazda RX-7's used the same one. I actually have an extra one I can mess with. They are both clogged. I've read that you can use fish tank charcoal for the inside. My biggest problem is figuring out how to open it up.

go to a wrecking yard and get the newest charcoal canister that you can find out of a late model car and swap the charcoal over.

I think it has been pressed together, so opening with out destroying it might be hard.

Is it needed on smog inspection or something?

I just want to keep it because my car is restored and I wanted to keep it original.

One thought I had was cutting it apart and welding it back together.

The ones we got in Australia are plastic, similar to the FC ones but shorter.

I don't know if that is something you would consider, it's not market correct, but model correct in other markets around the world.

I wonder why they are different.

I have absolutely no idea. LHD vs RHD? The one that came in my 1977 Capella was a metal one similar to the one in your rx7.
