I know of a few people that set there reserves 'sky high' just to test the waters and see what the auction will do; not actually being serious about selling. From what I can tell it started out at $200 and the price has subsequently been driven up to its' current level by a couple of bidders.
The real problem is, you don't know how legitimate the bids are. A couple of months ago a fellow in Greece sold his Cosmo Sport on Ebay, however, browsing the threads here at JNC reveals the high bidder never paid.
Having said that, if I were Jay Leno or someone well off and money was no issue to me, then I can see paying that much for an example of this condition. Especially here in the states.

16K for that in Australia would be an absolute bargain. There was a very run down one that sold for around 20ish recently (unroadworthy and rusty) there were 2 others that looked like wrecks that sold last year for well over 20K as well.

Original R100s, Rx2 coupes and Rx3s all pull decent money over here, its not uncommon to pay between $30 - $40K for a good car. Original and restored ones seem to get the most money over modified examples and are easier to sell. Not much we can do about it, cheap good cars are pretty much non existant these days over here. You can pay over 7K for a rusted out Rx3.... these are real sales and seem to be becoming the norm.

Do I think they are worth that sort of money, definitely not, however Im happy Ive got one of my own !

Wow! Might be worth a US shopping trip, if R100's like that go for US$16k...there's a near identical yellow R100 requiring total resto with no engine and gearbox for sale here on Gumtree for AU$15K, which is about the same money! Looks like a neat little car, worth the price and an RHD conversion. Looks funny without square headlamps though.
