 Post subject: Coolant Temperature Sensor in mazda 323 model 1985

Hi everybody
I have a mazda 323 model 1985 (or 1983, I'm not sure, I't my father's).
The problem is that the radiator fan does not switch on.
On the housing of the thermostat are mounted two "bolts" (one of them is the Coolant Temperature Sensor, the other I don't know), each bolt is connected with a cable.
When I disconnect one of these two cables that go to the thermostat housing, the radiator fan switches on and works fine!
So I think that the Coolant Temperature Sensor is malfunctioning.
Also, the thermometer (temperature meter) is not working. Is it using the same sensor?
What do you think?

What do you mean?
That maybe someone has switched the two wires connected on the two "bolts"? If that's what you mean, it`s not impossible! Not at all!
Do know what is the second "bolt" used for?
The first one is the Coolant temperature sensor.
The other? Is this the thermometer sensor, maybe?

Different sensors.

There's a failsafe on these older mazdas.. if you unhook the temperature sensor for the fan, it runs as long as the ignition is on.

The other sensor is for the thermometer in the car, check the wire and connector if its damaged/corroded.

These sensors should be fairly easy to source from mazda though, even for an '85 323

The temperture switch for the fan and the sensor for your teperturemeter are usualy quit close to eachother. I don't know if it's possible, but if both wires are switched (teperture switch on the temperture meter and the sensor on your radiator fan), it would explain why both are not working.

The two jacks (connectors? don't know the excact term) are different, so can't be switced.
Finally both of them (the sensors) were burned, I replaced them and everything works fine!
I thought thar maybe there had been produced an overvoltage and that burned them. I suspected a bad erthing of the dynamo (alternator) but it's ok, it gives 14.6 Volts at 4000 rpm of the motor.
Everything works fine up to now, thank you for your help!
