figured i'd stick a resto thread here.. if that's ok..

so while cruising craigslist a few weeks ago, i found an add for two CT70's and a "cub50". i contacted the guy about the cub as the two ct's were gone. after debating over it, i decided to give it a go. it's in rough shape, but the fact that this is probably the single most important and significant vehicle ever sold by honda, i just had to have it. over 60 million of these things have been made worldwide, and this is one of the oldest examples, i think... :) plus, it's a 50cc so i can ride it without a motorcycle license etc as a moped in my state. here are the two pics from the craigslist ad.. she's not pretty at all.. i will begin de-construction soon..

it's really only missing the front fender, front leg shield, and rear turn signals.. it's all there, but it all needs to be reworked.. wish me luck, for some stupid reason i bought it.. paid $80 for it.. just couldn't say no.

That is superb! :tu:
Fun project you can tinker on in the evenings with a beer and not be too worried about the bank balance.
Japanese Nostalgic Cycles!
I do not have a bike license (or any knowledge about bikes) but I will be interested in seeing your progress.
Nice purchase.

Hard to go wrong for $80!

I think it's totally cool that we're seeing a lot of scooter restorations on JNc lately.

yeah, that's what i thought! there is a lot of things that need to be done.. pretty much the whole thing. luckily, since these have been made since 1958 until NOW, there are plenty of new parts for it for super cheap! full set of directionals and brake light? $20.. new seat? $35.. new front leg shield? $50.. new set of wheels? $135.. so really not too bad. as long as i can rebuild the motor and trans, it should be worth it. i just don't know what color to paint.. keep it original or??? the plastics are white. i was thinking cream for the paint with the white plastic leg shield/fender..

hmmm. mint green would be pretty freakin pimp.. since it's so bad, i'd love to do just a restore, but because most parts will be new...

Nice start at a project.

I love Cubs. I work on them all the time at the scooter shop... well, I change tires on them all the time because that's about all that ever goes wrong on them.

You're right about parts being plentiful and cheap. That engine has been built under license and copied and ripped off and cloned and stuck in everything from Chinese dirtbikes to mini-choppers to modern mopeds. If your engine is shot, and if you don't mind a clone, they're easy to find. Not all of them are complete junk... just most of them... Sym Symba is a good one for example. Actually Sym manufactured the Cub for Honda for a long time, so it's not ever really a clone.

Fly Scooters made an entire Cub clone for a few months before they went out of business last fall. The local Fly dealer here sold their last three Scouts (what Fly called their clone) for $350 just a month or so ago. You might want to look around and see if there is a former Fly dealer in your area and if they have a scout left. There would be all your parts. How cool would it be to part out a brand new scooter to fix up your $80 Honda...

hmmm. there is a fly scooter dealer like 10 miles from my house. may have to give them a call..

i've narrowed this one down to a 1964 c102.. i think.. as far as i can tell at least. :)

man. i can't wait to start tearing this thing down.. i hope to keep as many of the original parts as possible, but if it's cheaper to buy replacements, that's going to happen!

i have a LOT of work to do...

Congratulations... I know all too well how irresistible some of Hondas early babies can be.. I've fallen into too many of these projects so far & one has led into another without completing the first yet!
It's refreshing to be able to get bits for them when parts support of older Honda cars seems so difficult. Though the costs still mount up.
It certainly looks a nice early one with the pushrod engine. I'd think most of the newer engines "inspired" by Hondas example evolved from the later OHC which Honda has evolved up to 105cc in the CT110 (sounds like these have more in common with the 50-70cc than the 90cc of late 1960's-80's).
Don't want to thread-jack but..

Was just watching NHK World (Japan´s national public broadcasting corporation) and todays Begin Japanology series was about Japanese Motorcycles.
Little section at the beginning about Super Cubs including a cool noodle delivery system that can be attached to the back to deliver full noodle bowls without spillage!
Not sure if you get NHK where you are but definitely worth a watch. Programs are repeated every 3 or 4 hours on day of broadcast so you should be able to catch a re-run.
Here is a link to program information -

Neko! They are fantastic and brilliant photographs as always!
They are slightly different than the one on the show.
I did a quick google search and found something similar to the one I saw -

Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

You set the noodle bowls on the bottom tray then clamp the tarpaulin over the top (it lowers down and is locked by that handle thing). Look closely and you can see that it hangs from a single fixing on top. This means that the noodle bowls stay horizontal even if you are getting a knee down when cornering with excessive speed. No noodle spillage!
I have been thinking about getting one of these and a Trueno to start delivering assorted Japanese cuisine throughout Arabia. Noodles and tofu sorted :tu:
Not sure what to deliver sushi with yet...
