Can anyone please enlighten me with more info on this epic little pocket rocket...

Image

Would love specs on any differences from standard Honda spec.
- Engine.
- Suspension.
- Brakes.
etc etc...

Also, how many were actually built?

And would it be possible to find one today?
In which case, what's the market value for a good, clean and original CRX PRO?

An actual factory built Mugen CRX PRO was never offered to the public. All of the parts were offered to build one up including the body kit. The photo posted is the cover of the parts catalog for all of the Mugen parts. Very high quality parts that could transform the CRX into a beast.

Okay.
Well what would the spec then be if someone actually went all-out on his CRX with every available Mugen part back then? Was engine size unchanged or was it perhaps bored out? Did Mugen offer a special head with larger valves? What kind of HP did it develop and what was performance like?
Also, would it be possible to find such a Mugen CRX PRO today? If so, I suspect it would be a quite a premium over a stock CRX?

This is from memory ... memory that is 30yrs old now.

Here in the USA American Honda offered a series of Mugen parts to their network of dealerships. These parts were mostly sold over the counter for the owners to install themselves.

What I remember includes:

A full exhaust system from header to tail pipes for CRX Si, CRX 1.5 and Civic S.
Steering Wheel
Showa Shocks
Front Sway Bar (not too sure about this one)
Mugen CRX Body Kit
Mugen Rear Wing
CF48 Alloy Wheels (13in only in the USA)
Different colored side stripes (replacing the factory red side stripe)
Mugen Stickers.
And some Mugen apparel (jackets & tshirts).

I had the exhaust on my 85 CRX Si and it was great. The engine reved quicker, felt stronger and made a great sound. I'm guessing it freed up about 8hp?

In 1986 both Acura and Honda offered some Mugen parts and not long after everything was moved over to King Honda Motorsports (I suspect American Honda was worried about emissions and safety liability and wanted to distance themselves). Under King Motorsports more hardcore parts were offered (cams, pistons, LSD and so on).

In Japan and other markets more parts were offered including a turbo kit for the CRX Si (I believe). In any case a Honda owner could install one part or the entire catalog. There was no turn key ready to drive off the lot CRX PRO offered. The individual parts are sought after and carry a premium value.

Since there are so many variables your questions can not be directly answered.

I hope this helps in some small way?

I does help - thanks! :D

Sadly though, it also makes it quite clear that my chances of finding a CRX that has been fully spec'ed to MUGEN PRO levels are probably next to non-existent...

I'm never the kind of guy to say it will be impossible to find. But the chances of finding a CRX with every Mugen part from the catalog is probably slim to none, however, you might find a well equipped CRX with a few parts. And then you'd be able to treasure hunt for the rest. That is gonna be your best bet.

Thx for that.
It wouldn't be something I'd necessarily be doing tomorrow anyway, so I guess I'll just keep my eyes peeled and see if anything interesting pops up within the next year or two...

That's pretty much all you can do. A Real CRX PRO kind of lives within the realm of a concept car. None where put into direct production, aside from Migens show mule. And any CRX with all of the parts is almost garunteed to be a fully caged racer. The Mugen parts where a tad expensive back then, the only people who could really afford the parts where race teams with big budgets.

The CRX on the cover of the Mugen catalog is rocking a set of Fortran Asso wheels. The only reason I recognize those wheels is that there is a pair of them (albeit in a 4x114.3 bolt pattern) on my Bellett. Unfortunately, only a pair...

A quick search for ASSO on Yahoo Auctions brings up a set of ASSO Minis, which are 10x4s and pretty cute, haha.
