Hold your jelousy until you see the pictures. I wasn't kidding about world's worst example ... this one is a 1965 and is really only a shell. Apparently it was a guy's project years ago and he put in Chevy 350 with three carbs in it! So the engine and the chain drive rear end are missing. I plan to rip off that awful hood blister, fix the hood. Then fix the floors and steering wheel. Then find some sort of 4cyl, rwd drivetrain to toss in. I guess some seats too to make myself a S600 rat rod. I paid $500 and probably over paid.

I figured with $500 in what is the worst that can happen? I sell it on to another sucker/dreamer and then I can always say I've owned a S600.

These were sold in Canada and there are a few kicking around. I'd like to find a set of headlight surrounds. Probably make my own grill.

A bike engine would be cool but they seem to be decent money here. The S2000 is very rare in Canada and I doubt I could source an engine cheaply. So whatever is a good deal and shows up first. I want to keep this whole project cheap since there is a good possibility it will be a fool's errand.

I like it. You can be creative with out feeling you are ruining anything.
More pics of the chassis and suspension.

I am thinking turbo rotary Mazda or early inline 4 cylinder.

I'm not sure if congratulations are in order or not? That poor old Honda has really been hosed over. At this point anything is fair game however and like a wreck on the freeway I will watch closely.

There is not a whole lot of under hood clearance in the S-series. Honda tilted the original engine over to the left to keep the profile low. So when looking for a donor try to find something short (maybe a Miata lump?).

The front wheels look like Honda centers with much wider rims welded on (I want to say stock wheels were 4.5in).

Enjoy the project ahead!

Don't worry your not alone.

Though admittedly this was collected as parts to support a better example I still fantasize what could become of it. 900-1l Honda M/cycle seems so tempting..

This also had no drivetrain, though my better example had a Datsun 1200 drivetrain bodged under it which admittedly doesn't fit too terribly (apart from leaf springs bolted to boot floor & alloy sheet held by screws to holes hacked into footwells), {thankfully it also came with most of an original drivetrain}.

Fitment of alternative drivetrains was sadly quite common here in '70's & '80's Australia so its not uncommon to see examples that had been fitted with Ford Escort, Toyota Corolla 1200, Datsun 1200, Mazda rotary drivetrains. Notably the S600 rear frame rails weren't designed for a live axle bouncing around below so they often feature a jacked up rear to allow some suspension travel (S800 frames were notched for extra clearance).

I'm not worried about ruining this one with an engine swap obviously but it is a shame if a good stock motor is pulled in these as the engine is one of things that make it special.

What is YAJ?

Thanks.

some more pictures

the wife got to see the Honda for the first time ...

Image

Some old beer bottles, a generator, and an exhaust manifold plus a large amount of dead bush.

Image

Moss growing on the car - that just doesn't happen around here - quite a dry climate.

Image

Apparently the last owner ran it with this seat sitting loose and the open floors - with Chevy V8 power! Also just a jerry can for a gas tank and no radiator.

Image

Certainly doesn't take too much room in the garage. Clean up and evaluation tonight.

I think a new hood and new rear end will make a huge differance for this car. Those tires poking out just looks bad.

here is our progress from yesterday. Mostly cleaning but still. My oldest boy helped out and I taught him how to drill out pop rivets. He also cleaned the windshield and fiberglass seat. I took out a whole yard bag full of dirt and plant debris from the interior.

The builder was fond of wood for making body panels. These were the "structural" ones holding up the plywood. It is gone to the trash now.

Even better there was stiff carpet acting as the trunk floor!

Image

What was left of the steering wheel. There is several interesting articles online on how to make the wood ring. I might attempt it - we'll see as it looks like a lot of work.

here is one - http://www.mgexperience.net/article/diy ... eel-1.html

Image

The trunk lid as well as many of the wood body panels. Some old beer bottles as well. There is an old Chevrolet generator tucked in there too.

Image

Sorry for the poor photo. I've got the hood blister off. The stock hood was cut then bent upwards to hold the blister one.

I intend to fix and but will wait until I have my engine in as it may need a smaller and nicer blister. Does it look better or worse with it gone? :)

That poor, poor car. The S_00 is one of my favorite JNC vehicles. Any life you can give it that's closer to what it started out as is a gift. I hope you're a talented welder!

The biggest issue, IMO, is the missing engine. The sound of that thing makes the car as far as I'm concerned.

Good luck with this, wherever it goes.

Congrats on your new purchase. You saved another S series Honda.

I think you were somewhat lucky, these cars are pretty rare and to find one for $500 even in this condition is not too bad. Just the body panels are worth well over $500. The plus of it all you can now do whatever you want with the car. You dont have to worry about destroying anything. Lol

Considering you are in Canada there are a bunch of guys out there that have parts cars and maybe some engines laying around. I have a few contacts that might be able to get you another s600 engine. I will search for the details & PM you.

Keep us updated with the progress

All I can say is WOW haha. Like Norcal said, you can work on it however you like and it would definitely not be worse than that hahaha :tu:

Does anyone have some decent photos or diagrams of how the S800 rear suspension is setup? I think I need to duplicate it on my car.
