 Post subject: Racing on Rota RBs

Anyone use Rota RBs (They look like Panasports) for track or autoX? I'm looking into a set of 15x7s so I can run some race tires that I can pick up used for free, all the time with perhaps 3 or 4 sessions on them. They are crazy sticky, designed as a Spec tire for the Radical SR8s. They are a full slick Dunlop, and I think would work wonders on my car. They work out to being about a 215 50 15. I'm worried about breaking cheap wheels with that kinda grip. Currently I run a set of Panasport 14x7s and Hayashi Street IIs (Also known as Command 500s) in a 14x6.5. Both of these wheels are sweet, the Hayashis being my wheels of choice (they feel really solid on the car, best of the bunch I have.) but finding race tires in a 14 is starting to get hard. Currently I'm running a set of Hoosier Street TDs (vintage race spec) because they were what I could afford (free) at the time.

Any thoughts on the wheels? I know Rotas are pretty popular with the sport tuner crowd, but how strong are they?

I had a set of RB's on my car before. After one track day I noticed one tire kept going flat after 2-3 days. When I finally got it checked, the wheel was cracked where one of the spokes met the rim.

I don't have a problem running them on a light weight street car, but I'd never race on them again.

Just my $0.02.

I'd really like to be able to run these Dunlop slicks, but I'd also like a good street tire, and those are pretty much gone (discussed in another thread). The RBs could be cool street wheels on a sub 2000 lb car. I might sell my 14 inch Libres and buy a set of these for the street. There are still a few 14 race tires, but dang, free race tires if I can find a set of wheels that fit... I gotta keep the Panasports if I go vintage racing, and the Hayashis are just too hard to come by to let go.

I don't want to crack a wheel. I hate having mechanicals at a race, and a cracked/broken wheel pretty much ends the day unless you have more than one set of race wheels.

And totally don't fit on the car car. The bolt pattern is right, backspacing is all wrong. I've heard those break as well. I don't really want to break down and spend the $ for yet another set of Panasports (I got smoking deals on the 2 sets I have, but for this one I think I'm going to have to buy new and spend retail. Ouch. I'll do some more research on the Rewinds, but I don't think the wheel hub clears the hub on the car, and the offset/backspacing is wrong as well. Perhaps they have more sizes now.

I figured they would stick out, but thought if you were running or 22" slicks it wouldn't matter. :P

Currently they make a 14x7 -9 offset, 15x7 zero offset, and a 16x7 zero offset.

The tires I'm trying to run are about a 215 width. Wider than my 205s, narrower than my 225s (but not by much) Negative offset won't fit at all, 0 or low positive might work. The Hayashis are a +9 and don't have enough back spacing, and the Panasports are 0 offset but will just clear the 225s. I need to pull the tires off the Panasports so I can accurately measure the backspacing.

Let go of it dude. Just like the OS Giken LSD, you have to pay for what you get. Rota and Konig wheels are not good quality. GO for a set of Panasports of watanabe wheels and call it a day. I hate cheap knock off shit from China. Pisses me off more than anything else.

you can roll cheap rims if its a street car without too much worry but i wouldn't venture out on a circuit with them.

I'll go with SSRs, plain and simple. Some are very rare and are made very liteweight and durable. Never heard of any complaints either.

I'm rolling a set of SSR EX-C Superfins right now on my S13. My drift rims are a set of old school Enkei Apache Vs gold mesh.

SSR and Enkei are both Japanese track proven wheels. :wink:

I agree with KresSlyda180.

SSRs are pretty tough and I never hear anyone saying these wheels crack.

SSRs are cool but finding a set that fits on the car with the correct offset/backspacing that I need is next to impossible. There are a few 14" wheels but no 15x7 that I know of. If I had the budget to spend big $ I'd just go buy a set of Panasports and call it good. I posted the same question to the Alfa Forum and there are several people who run them with no issues, a distributor who says they are 13.9lbs on a UPS scale and they have not had a single return on the wheels because one broke or cracked.

For now however, this project is on hold as I am trying to acquire a 1959 Alfa Romeo 101 Sprint. (Barn find), somewhat ugly but has some hard to find and expensive parts on it. I think I might be able to get it for far less than what its worth so I'm working on that for now.

i know a few spec miatas that race on RB's without problems.. just buy 'em..

rota used to be an OEM supplier to a lot of manufacturers anyways..

Uh, Rotas are made in the Philippines, NOT China.. big difference. Now, IF they were made in China, then you should worry. :|
