Hye JNC'ers:

I've gotta 85' Celica with start up issues..
It cranks but doesn't start up...
Haven't start in a couple months or so..their is gas in the tank BTW..

Even tried to "redneck" it and pull it with an ATV on 2nd gear and no go.
Checked the fuel rail and wires; its all buttoned up.
Can it be the fuel pump?
AFM?

Any opinions?

Spray some start up fluid (or any ethynol based product, brake cleaner, Carb cleaner) into the throttle body, if it starts then dies, its a fuel issue.

If you spray it in and its the same thing with no combustion, then its an ignition issue. Try taking a video and post the link on here.

thanks...that's one of the first things I tried..seems like its starts up; just flutters, bogs down and stops running...

I closed the butterfly valve on the Throttle body and the engine stops running, its weird.

It was my daily driver for years now..

It sounds like its not getting fuel, pressure test the system at the fuel pump, make sure you get the right amount of pressure coming out at the pump.

You can get a pressure test kit at any auto parts store. Usually like $40 bucks. or some will loan it out.

Once you have the fitting in line, see how much pressure is being sent out, just look up the specs of how much it should be sending. If its not sending the correct psi, then fuel pump is problem. If it is getting correct amount, problem at the injectors.

Or just pressure test it after the fuel filter as well, if not correct amount after filter, could be a clogged fuel filter as well.

I own an 85 Celica GTS and am also a member on the Celica-GTS.com forum. Other forum members have been having troubles with either the fuel pump or igniter going out. Seems like the OEM stuff has reached its end.

I say time for engine swap!!

Thaks I'll check into the pressure test kit...

As for engine swap; If i do get the issue handled, my 22re only has 186k original miles, my dad has been the only owner since new, so until valves knock or worse, i'm sticking to the trusty 22...

But if I do get an engine swap: 3s BEAMS.

So, when you tried with starter fluid it did start? And when you closed the butterfly it stopped or am I reading it wrong?

It would crank it up a little more, sputter and just turn off...
If you would spray none stop,( i know: dangerous), with the butterfly open.. it would get gas but it still wouldn't start..

It never stayed idling in other words..
