Here's an idea, let's trim the Forum Garages down to four based on the American Redneck System:

Chevy
Dodge
Other

Then everyone here can be equally discriminated against just like everywhere else.

Then, maybe we could all work for a couple decades to build a broad aftermarket offering parts for all makes and models, only to have the parts clerk ask the eternal question "What year Civic are you working on?". Oh, wait, that's the screwed up state of the world as it is now...

Watch the howls when it is suggested that one of the existing forum marques be removed, and that is the way those of us who are perpetually in the "Other" category feel. Think about that before sniping.

It has always amazed me how groups of owners can transition from unaccepted niche status to mainstream, then turn around to the remaining unaccepted niche group and treat them with just as much disrespect as they had only a few months or years prior.

In the US, we put up with "Is it Ford, Chevy, or Dodge?", as the question from the parts clerk.

Sport Compact Car magazine hit the shelves, and the first three cover cars were VW Scirocco, Ford Escort (the crappy US Escort, not the Cosworth), and Geo Storm (Isuzu Gemini Coupe), There were a lot of Hyundai Scoupes mixed in there too. It was a stereo and custom body work magazine, with a little performance thrown in, well, if you could call ripping out the fuel injection and installing a carburetor a performance upgrade. There were early Z cars, Supras, and RX-7s as the exotic car ideal. But 240SX and Starion were criticized as having truck engines. Subaru? - the Justy. Mitsubishi? - the Colt. Neither exactly inspiring for the time.

No Hondas anywhere to be seen, this was before the Californians figured out that they could redesign every single engine component to keep them from blowing up if you tried to push them, and then redesigned every suspension component so they wouldn't flip over going down the quarter mile. But Honda was the first to be accepted, and it took all those parts to keep the cars from scattering parts all over the track, a market grew, and the parts guy changed his question to: "Is that Ford, Chevy, Dodge, or Honda?" Nothing else was worthy of owning or working on, and anyone foolish enough to spend money on something else was wasting their money.

VW developed a market. Subaru and Mitsubishi introduced powerful cars, lending credibility to their previous models. Nissan and Toyota did the same.

The rest of us? Remember that Ford Escort and Geo Storm from the Sport Compact Car magazine covers? No one else does. The rest of us were left out in the cold to fend for ourselves.

A lot of this has to do with high school kids and rice boy mentality, but I see some of the same sneaking into this website too. Look at the "Is your car a classic?" thread. It quickly transitioned from owners explaining how proud they were of their own car, to people shooting down other people's cars because they didn't have chrome bumpers or did have fuel injection. So, because a company continues using old technology, their cars continue to be classics a decade past the other forward thinking companies who embrace new technology? Pretty thin argument for exclusion, and exclusion in website catering to such a deep niche is just too hypocritical.

Is it practical to have a separate board for every single marque? How many marques are there in Japan? Maybe it isn't practical. But that doesn't make it right, any more than it would be to suggest that the forums catering to larger groups of owners should be removed. One thing to remember, though, exclude any group or relegate them to the "Other" category, and they won't come here and grow in this community in numbers that will show a need for their own forum outside the "Other" category.

Now, this is just my opinon, but let me say this as far as "individual garages" go. There are many great model or brand specific forums out there that cater to those cars and therefor have greater activity. What I think is great about this site is the cross section of owners from other forums whose advise we would not normally have access to on a vehicle specific forum. Just because someone is into Datsuns now does not mean at some point in time they weren't big into Mitsu's and have a wealth of knowledge that would not be available on a Datsun specific forum. I mean, would you go to Ratsun for Suburu information? But, that Ratsun member may also come here and be able to offer insight on the question due to the fact he/she may have worked for a Suby dealer 20 years ago. I may be off base on the *purpose* of this forum, but I feel this is where the strength of this forum is- the cross section of members from other sites coming together here. I know I recognize many screen names from all maner of other import sites. Strength in numbers. Anyways, while there may not be specific garages for certain makes, I don't think that is a hinderance in members not looking in there. There is just not enough in that particular make/model to justify a separate area for 1-2 posts a month when there is most likely a owners group somewhere that *may* be a better source for info?

Also the JT's were a great model Isuzu - what an amazing engine and design (esp the Nero's).

JT191 - you should write and argumentative column for the magazine.

But:

Does Isuzu deserve the recognition that the other manufacturers get for their so called nostalgic models? I think so without a doubt.

So come on Japan Nostalgic Magazine, show us some Isuzu's.

I'd be interested to see a list of all of the Japanese manufacturers even on a separate topic. Hino seems as rare as most even mention.

As it applies here, I would think that showing the oddest, rarest, and least known in the forefront would add to the educational value and credibility of the website. AE86s and Hakosukas are great, but that content does not set this site apart from other websites on the net.

Isuzu didn't make an awful lot of passenger cars, especially prior to joining GM in 1971. The only models I can think of are the Bellel, Bellett, Florian, Gemini, Piazza and Aska and of course the Hillman Minx they built in the 1950's. There are probably one or two more but a lot of the other model names are attached to varients of the models I've already mentioned.
