G'Day,

This weekend was the Australian Hillclimb championships at the relatively new haunted hills track in Gippsland in Victoria. It's an awesome track- google "haunted hills video, gippsland" and there's plenty of examples.

Anyway, loads of different cars form open wheelers, to HQ's (for those non-aussies, think of the mazda "toad" pacer - it's that body)

I took a few pics so plenty of viewing...... 8)

This had a 750cc bike engine in it. brave man with your bum that close to the ground......

This is a club member, who won his class and currently holds the lap record in his class.
Image
Image
He had fairly stiff competition in Steve Richards (aussie V8 supercar driver who does tarmac rallies as well) in his quick little escort. They kept beating each other by 1/1000ths of a sec each run so good to watch. The club member above is also double Steve's age.

2 more stories to tell.
First I'm wandering thru the pits and find this (hard to miss)
Image
with these wheels.....................
Image
in a Zed.....
Image
It looked tough and the sounds was music to my ears................ I've got some vids I'll upload later. ohh, and it is 4 wheel steer too!
Lastly was this. had an 1100 odd cc engine in it.
Image
It looked even worse up close than it did from afar. It looked like whatever was lying around in the shed went on it. Now for those who have watched The World's Fastest Indian - could be called the burt munro story or something like that in the US (BTW one of the best movies i've seen)- it was exactly like that.....
he'd done his run and figured he could get a bit more out of it, so rather than scrape his tyres down, he does this.
Image
That's him in the pic- with the sander plugged into his generator...

ahh yes kaz, mr mackrell's 600z (aka the yellow and purple 260). know him thru big stevie.

that thing is 6.5 litres, or about 400ci of small block chev, full of NASCAR hardware (hence the earnhardt rocker covers), about 700hp in mild tune...!! thru a 3 speed manual shift auto trans (yes... it's an auto in it!!), with the 4 wheel drive hardware made up of some nissan gt-r stuff for the steering as well, and some subaru forester stuff, giving 6 stud wheels...
the thing is just an animal!!

these days is a pretty reliable unit, but when he first got it going, you weren't game to go near it when it was on the start line, because it would either "grip and go", or "grip and BANG" with the associated shrapenal!!
made for excitement at the old morwell track, for sure.

Good pick up Bura.... not sure what was in it though-to me (the uneducated mazda engine person)it didn't sound out of the ordinary and still had the rotary buzz... i went passed a couple times and he wasn't there. all i know is it has a 3.4lt in it.

i saw under the bonnet earlier that morning (we got there around 9:30).
has an fj20 with a decent sized hairdryer in there.
for the uneducated, that makes the total capacity 3.4lt, due to the 2.0lt engine being multiplied by 1.4 for the "forced induction conversion factor" outlined in the rules, so the 2.0lt becomes 3.4lt.
personally, if i have to like just 1 rx7, then it's this one... coz it's now got a real engine!!

1 38 GOWERS Norman Morris Mini 63.25 66.10 64.37 63.22 72.48 63.54 * 63.16 63.16
2 13 CANTWELL David Honda Civic 67.80 67.20 66.51 66.47 67.78 65.79 * 65.78 65.78
3 138 GOWERS John Morris Mini 78.89 74.88 * 70.27 104.06 71.53 70.39 70.27

The * is their fastest run - so they got 2nd and 4th.

And clearly my memory has gone- coz' the rx7 i was thinking DEFINITELY had the usual note- must've been the early one...........
