I count 36 1/2 unless you count the classic 10-speed bike in the lower right corner

Glad you guys like the pic. It is not available in hi-res as it was taken in the '70s with a 35mm. I actually came across the picture in the Porsche Forums and they were loving on it as well.

As for location, I'd swear that looks just like Omotesando in Harajuku ( Tokyo ), with the photo taken from the pedestrian footbridge near the point where 'Cat Street' ends?

It used to be a very popular cruising spot for young guys from the suburbs with cool cars, taking their girlfriends for a look at the bright lights. They would have started to illuminate the trees down the 'avenue' around that time.

I used to work and socialise about two minute's walk away from there. It's quite different now to how it was even back then, and those Keyaki trees are much bigger too......

No, I think he's heading up towards Aoyama Dori ( Route 246 ) - and coming from the Yoyogi Koen / Harajuku Eki direction. That queue of traffic on the far side of the road is waiting to turn right into Meiji Dori ( Shinjuku direction ) I think?

That's if the photographer was hanging over the railings of the footbridge on the side I'm thinking of! It's hard to tell. I don't see any buildings I recognise to get my bearings from.....

You could be right too. :)

I just spotted the policeman near the Miura. That makes sense, as his Koban would be right there just out of shot on the right of the picture. The pavement is wider on that side of the road at that point.

So we are looking towards Meiji Dori from the bridge near 'Cat Street', with Aoyama behind us......

Having just written that, there's a possibility that the photo could have been taken from the other pedestrian bridge - further up Omotesando, towards Aoyama. Near where the Shu Uemura shop and Hanae Mori building are.....

Which would make sense, as the 'ramp' for the footbridge is not visible on the original photo ( when it should be if it's the bridge near 'Cat Street' and the Koban ) and the 'ramp' for the second bridge faces away from the photographer on that side.....

God, I love trivia like this  I'm in the wrong business, obviously.

Aha......

Does this solve it? Slightly later than the original photo ( maybe around ten years later? ) but roughly the same spot I think. This photgrapher is standing in the middle of the bridge, rather than on the right.........

That's the bridge near 'Cat Street', and facing up towards Aoyama direction ( with the easily recognisable antique shop on the right there ), which would be - I think - facing 180 degrees to the original photo.

I think the vantage point in the original photo is the other bridge - further up Omotesando ( Route 413 ) towards the junction with Route 246? You can see the two pedestrian bridges on this stretch of Omotesando in the Google Maps and Google Earth images, and they are still in their same original locations. Unlike most of the buildings, which have changed dramatically since the period in which the original photo was taken. The new 'Omotesando Hills' shopping complex stands on the site of the old Harajuku 'Dojunkai Apato' apartment mansion blocks ( which were there from the late 1950s I believe ) and completely changes the look of the area. We used to hurry past the Dojunkai, as there were so many mosquitoes around them and their drains were so smelly! Happy days......
