 Post subject: cut coils

Does anyone know how many coils cut equals certain lengths. I'm trying to drop my corolla 4 1/2 in. In the front. I'm just doin this till I can afford a true suspension setup. Any info would be tight. Thanks .

just chop off 2 coils, and testfit, if you need more low chop of another coil, there is no way of pre measuirng how much your car will be lower if you cut of one or two coils.

Actually, you can get a rough estimate: Since your Corolla has McPherson struts, the front suspension has a motion ratio of nearly (see below) 1:1. Put the car on the ground and measure the distance between coils. Divide your desired drop (4.5in) by that number to get the # of coils. A couple of caveats:

1. This will get you close to your desired drop. However, when you cut coils, the spring rate goes up so your car will not drop as much as you thought (spring rate is a function of the number of free coils so, if your spring had 10 free coils and you cut two, your spring rate will go up about 20%).

2. Because the strut is at a slight angle the motion ratio is not a true 1:1 but it is close.

I suggest you have an extra set of coils readily available just in case you cut too much...

I suggest starting with 1 coil and test fitting, cutting 1/4 to 1/2 coil at the time afterwards. That way you dont cut too much like I did initially. But you can just fix it by making spring spacers like I did if you go too far.
