I can think of a couple that I'd like to have.

1972 Plymouth Barracuda with a 440, 4 speed and 4 barrel. Best options available at the time.

1972 Buick GS455 with a 4 speed

1972 Baldwin Motion Super Vega

First year 1972 Rx-3 would be nice too.

I guess that's about it. I already have a Celica and a MS75 Crown so I'd stick to the dometic cars.

The Savanna GT for me 8)

12a twin dizzy, 5 speed - dress it up with some of the factory options like the LSD, close ratio box, ported motor, fat wheels...

Then find a dry dark garage, jack the car up and through a car cover on it for 30 years... :tu:

I guess I should answer my own question. For the longest time, I probably would have gone with an AMC Javelin AMX with 401, 4-speed and stripes. Gotta have the stripes.

Make sure you order the "go pack", it comes with stripes. :tu:

This, one of the last Isuzus that was imported here early in 1972. I guess it would have lookesd a bit better then...

1974 is the only SR-5 "Mango" that the U.S. market ever got as far as I know. Maybe some late production 73's?? But every single one I've ever seen had the big bumpers from the factory.

Guess again. 8)

The last MS55 Crown that rolled into the US was in the spring/summer of '71.

Late '71 and '72 Crowns are the S60 "Kujira" Crown.

The Datsun Z is a great choice, but if it's REALLY 1972 could I afford it?

I'd probably do what I did in 1972, and that is to buy a 1971 Celica early in 1972. Still a new car, but at a reduced rate for buying one year back to get their older model new cars off their sales floor.

If you won't accept that, then it would be a 1972 Celica.

Though, the Luxury Sedan Cressida was a very popular car in 1972. Though now that I look a photo up online it looks similar to some years of the Camry. Appears like more movement room in the Cressida and a leaner line to the car inside and out.

You might have broken the rules. 8)

According the the owner of a local Toyota dealer (who's been in business since '68), the Kujira Crown was never "officially" sold in the US. A few dealers specially ordered a few of them but they weren't intended for the US market, and were not sold at very many dealers. according to him, the MS55 wast the last official US-market Crown.

Any corroboration?

Well it would explain why Toyota USA claims the S50 is the last Crown. The brochure on ToyotaReference.com is a UK one (note the spelling of "centre" and "kerb"). Although, the gulf states were on a different distribution system than the rest of the country when it comes to parts, not sure about actual cars. So perhaps the mystery continues...

Either way, my vote goes for a Celica.

NOO!!! I actually realized that today when I was grocery shopping with my wife (yes I think about cars at all times of the day, lol).

My revised answer is this, celica coupe. I'd be trading in my s50 crown, lol. (which would never really happen if I had an s50 crown, haha)

Sorry, would that be the S5 then. Wasn't that the top of the line coupe?

Even though I'm a 2 time S30Z owner currently, if it were 72 I'd probably go for a Mazda RX-2

Don't mean to be bustin your chops kingtoy, but the S5 was also 1974 only. But there was a '73 SR-5! That's why I just said "5-speed."

Oh, and as far as the Crowns, I have a dealer catalog thing (dated 11/71) that pictures MS65, MS63, and MS75 Crowns.
