Ok. I need a new project. I'm picky as hell when it comes to styling though. I need a wagon, because I have kids and I regularly have tools and other various crap in my trunk, but that's never enough room. I am a skilled fabricator and mechanic, and I do body work for a living. I have been considering wither a 510 wagon, around '72, or a te38 corolla wagon. I like a straight belt line, not a wagon that you can tell was made to be a sedan, then the rear section was just slapped on and call it a wagon. I need something pre 75 to be emissions exempt. Opinions, ideas, comments, and suggestions welcome and appreciated.

While I do like the rx3 in sedan form, if you read the op I said a straight belt line. Look at the rx3 wagon from the side and look at the body line that is formed by the moulding at the bottom of the door glass. That line needs to be straight front to back.

That's an interesting stipulation. Besides a small handfull of datsuns (510, 1200, 1000) I can't bring to mind many pre 75 wagons that aren't curvy.

Plenty of boxes in the 80's though (lookin' at you Toyota :P )

The only other suggestion I could make would.the the Mitsubishi Colt wagon, but that's possibly down to my own personal preference. Don't know if it has quite enough of a straight belt line though.

If you're willing to forego that requirement I'd suggest a Toyota Crown Wagon. Can't remember the model designation exactly but the one commonly known as "Kujira"

That is a beautiful car. Would be beautiful in black. Those have to be harder to find though, don't they? I don't mind paying to get it shipped in to PA.

You might try contacting this guy to see if it' still available. The car is a little rough around the edges and the swap will need to be refabricated, but as far as the car goes it is very complete.

The front seats, carpet and rear jumper seat were all redone by me a few years ago and are still holding up fine. The dash needs some love and the wiring is a bit of a mess now. I sold this car about 3 years ago now. But you can't go wrong with a MS63 Crown wagon.

The corolla wagon, while beautiful, will not really serve my purpose. As I said, I have kids. Still in car seats, a 2 door is a pain in the ass. The datsun is just not a good looking car to me. I like the early 70's 510 wagon, but they are a little small.

Most of what you are looking at, are gonna be a bit on the small size. To get something useable for your job and kids, you most likely are gonna have to cross the '76 line. You might have some luck looking at the MS55(earlier gen than the Crown posted) wagons. There have been a few listed in the PAC NW lately. A 710 or 810 wagon might work for you as well. They are a bit bigger and still smog-exempt as well.

None of those really fit the criteria. Plus most of them are ugly. No offense. I'm thinking a crown wagon is the way I'm gonna go. A little more expensive than I originally planned. I'm gonna have to save some more scratch. Find an ls 400, swap engine, tranny, rear suspension, dash, steering column, front seats, etc. Throw some bags on it, maybe a turbo...

I would go 7m or 1us, but I will probably be towing with it, so v8 torque makes more sense to me. Maybe a 1st gen tundra 4.7? Anyone ever tried to swap one of those into anything besides that little frankenstein twin turbo xb?

there are a few 1UZs that have been swapped into MkII Supras and such. I believe there is even some one that makes a very expensive, but really cool ITB manifold for them. Search the web and you will find.

The Lexus 1UZ (LS400, SC400, etc) is pretty cheap, and like Okie said has been swapped into older Toyotas many times.

That thing is sweet. I may stick with the auto tranny though. The wife hates that third pedal. Broke the transmission in my subaru like 7 or 8 times, two clutches... One was a stage 3 carbon ceramic 6 puck.
