Good day everyone. I just want to ask for suggestions. I drive 81 miles a day, 5 days in a week on a 60 freeway with bad traffic. How reliable can a 4k engine be on this type of situation? Should I just change the engine of my starlet? What engine can you suggest? Big thanks.

We had a 4 door KP back when I was a kid, my dad used it everyday as his commuter although his commute was not as long as yours. Never gave him/us any headache's, its a pretty reliable engine as long as you give it TLC.

Thanks Gene. I was planning to buy a starlet with 4k engine and has a 114k miles on it, what can you suggest to do first with the engine? Thanks.

All new fluids and filters would be a good start!
Make sure your radiator is in good condition and not clogged up. No dried coolant hoses either. If you want to be thorough, a new water pump adds to peace of mind.
Then go through all the ignition parts from plugs to cap and rotor, making sure everything is in good condition and adjusted correct.
Suppose if you want to be extremely thorough you could put a new oil pump in there too, but if the car has been reasonably cared for with regular oil changes through its life, then that's probably a little overkill.
But in a nutshell, it's all about lubrication, cooling and ignition. Keep that in mind and your 4K should see you through just about anything... :tu:

Thanks Anders. That a very helpfull tips. I was wondering, if it passed the smog test, does it mean that the engine is in good condition? Thanks for the reply.

Yes and no. Though probably mostly no.
It is perhaps an indication that the engine is not utterly fubar, but it is by no means any guarantee...

Pretty much think that it'll hold out. Just need to check it regularly to have some peace of mind :)
