Mitsubishi Montero, in a beautiful and rare shade of factory(?) green.

Washington plates?? It does look like it could be the rare factory green, known as Canadian Green. (Code L53) If it was then it would be super rare, nice spot!!

Not sure what you mean by "design study" but they sold thousands and thousands of those here in the US.

They're not exactly uncommon in Japan.

Of course, it helps to know where to look for them.

Wats looking good!

In the mid-1970s, following US federalized regs for cars, and in an attempt to cater for US consumers, Nissan decided to set up a design studio for the US market. San Diego was decided because is was in the then pre-Williamsburg hip center of the US - or close enough to it.

One of their first specific concepts was a pre-EXA coupe design study, that featured many of the to be later produced EXA design cues. Such as those tail lights. Although I now write that, I seem to recall an even earlier Japanese study featuring similar... Damn.

I think they were also given a hand at the 300ZX? Numerous successful designs have since followed. Putting to bed the usual automotive design assumptions US market success is achieved by over-wrought, wood, chrome and superficiality.

While there are indeed a few EXA still trawling roads in Japan, this is the only one I have seen with the wagon-back actually being used on the road. There was supposed to be a number of variable backs (utility?), and I am not sure how many made it into production, and how many of each were actually sold...

Others may care to comment on the facts though! Neko.

For what it's worth, here in the US I think it was just the standard "coupe" back and the optional "wagon" back. :tu:

Haven't seen any others...

There must be a reference on the web somewhere? Perhaps I can use the WABAC machine again...

By the scenery it looks like it is Australia. I am guessing mid 1980s by the clothes he is wearing?? The RT40 Corona looks to be in too good a condition to be much later than that as it would then be about 20 years old.

Got back late last week from a two week trip to Japan.
Here's a few cars I spied. Not as many nostalgics as in past trips, but then I wasn't really looking for them this time, and some of these may not be as nostalgic as required, but I hope you'll still like 'em.
