Dunno! But, the interwebs coughed this little gem up, so perhaps:

In 1975, the "Astron 80" introduced a system dubbed "Silent Shaft": the first use of twin balance shafts in a modern engine. It followed the designs of Frederick Lanchester, whose original patents Mitsubishi had obtained, and proved influential as Fiat/Lancia, Saab and Porsche all licenced this technology. [http://www.autozine.org/technical_school/engine/smooth2.htm "Engine Smoothness"] , Mark Wan, "AutoZine Technical School, 1998–2000]

I am sure some whizz here will know for sure... Neko.

This was in a Toyota service garage and dealership on Geary St. in San Francisco. I think it was a temporary display but I haven't been in the area to check again (will do). It was late at night and all the shops were locked up when I saw it. My pals weren't too happy standing in the cold as I drooled on the window raving about an old Toyota.

Anyone have any idea why I've seen a few of these lately? Taxi-pack, rear spolier, & Watanabe?

A neat look! If you're into rapid taxi I suppose... Neko.

A cheap drifter? Or maybe the "commercial cool" look popularized by Kousoku Yuen mag perhaps...

The one car I've always hated that Toyota wasn't smart enough to sell here. Why? It was new, small, cheap, and RWD.

Funny you ask though because every one I've ever seen online has black Watanabes on it. Started to wonder if it was a factory option... :P

According to Wikipedia (that well known accurate source of information), only 59 were built. So, unless I've been very lucky to see three or so, they are perhaps now being cloned... An effective looking machine regardless! Neko.

Well, it's pretty easy to make your own performance car if you have the right mods and the capital.

Look at the USA 4-5 years back. Not enough classic muscle cars with the fables trim levels and mods on hand to meet demand, so what did people do? RESTO-MODS!! Because a clone is good enough as the original, right?

That market tanked spectacularly. Almost like the housing market.

At least donor cars are plentiful... Here's a yard full waiting for their superchargers, Watanabe, single color paint, and spoilers:

This is what I see when I poke my head out the back door. It's not mine sadly, but my neighbours.
