1968 G130 special six

Hi everyone.

I recently acquired a 1968 datsun G130 of a mate. Im hoping to tidy it up and fit a vh41 or 45 and automatic and use it as a weekend cruiser.
Its badged as a super six, but i think its a special six. It has the early L23 and 3 speed column change.

My mate was using it as a daily a few years ago and it has sat for a while. Just needed a cleanup and a battery and away it went.
Unfortunatley its a bit low to pass a roadworthy inspection so i have been working on that first.

One of the rear leaf springs was flipped so i just dismantled the leaves and reset them.
The front coils have been cut so i will track down a pair of xf falcon fronts and use them
Here is a photo after doing the rears.

I have a set of these wheels also. 14x6 Im not sure what they are called but am thinking of running them, but i think i will run some 16inch wheels. I want to run some tall tyres as the roads are very poor in northern Queensland and need something that can handle a few potholes.

Im trying to track a vh45 half cut to fit. I will fit the complete engine/auto/ecu etc, and if possible the front brakes. I think i will have to convert the engine to mid sump as the datsun crossmember is a funny shape, curving forward, but the steering arm is pretty far back. All the suspension is mounted to the crossmember so maybe i can modify a torana/HQ style crossmember and suspension to run the front sump VH and also fit the steering rack off the halfcut.

If i get a chance i will attemp to fit the a/c and heater setup, perhaps with an older a/c controller

Re: 1968 G130 special six

Bit of progress the last week or two. Got some scrapers and cleaned some of the crap. Even got the mrs on the job!
04.jpg[/attachment:34slp1lg]

Bought a g50 half cut which i hope to recieve after my next shift maybe?

Im on days off shift so i managed to get a bit of work done.
Pulled the motor/gearbox and crossmember. Was a bit of a battle by myself with just a jack!
05.jpg[/attachment:34slp1lg]

Got the suspension apart. It was pretty easy apart from splitting the ball joints. One of the mounting bolts was jamed in the bush so i had to give it a bit of death to get it out. The main bushes were pretty good, but the pins were a bit corroded. I think i will get some new ones if i can find some.

Empty!
07.jpg[/attachment:34slp1lg]

Got the column and some of the dash out. Looks like the heater box is stuffed, but i would like to fit a/c so i will rip it all out and put something late model in.
09.jpg[/attachment:34slp1lg]

Should be enough room for a vh45?

Re: 1968 G130 special six

forgot to mention both lower ball joints need replacing.

I have the nissan part numbers
right:
40160-P0110
40160-E0100
40160-73000

left:
40161-P0110
40161-E0100
40161-73000

Now i just have to find some. There are a few chines manufacturers that make them, but ideally i would like to get some 555 ones or other japanese ones.

Can anybody put me onto a place where i can get some from? thanks

The export versions were SuperSix (I have a 2400 SuperSix), the SpecialSix was Japanese market and for tax reasons they had an L20 with twin carbs with a similar output to our bigger L's.

Doing a thorough job there! Good luck!

Oh and the balljoints, the only difference with the 230 (the partnumbers with P) is the metric thread of the bolts, otherwise they are interchangeable.

start with the local Nissan dealer- you'd be AMAZED at what they still have in the main whs....
A 320 ute, 2 roadsters, 2 1200's ...... & a Prince.

Sounds like I need to come to Australia then, when I ask for parts for my Datsuns here they stare at me and say "sir, we are a Nissan dealership..." Ever since Renault took over they managed to work all the old dealers out and they seem to ignore anything over 10 years old here (few exceptions but generally that's the feeling)

It appears a previous owner has fitted the 'datsun 2400 supersix' badges as i found the old 'datsun 2300' badges under the floor of the boot. the L23 i pulled out is a bit of an oddball. Its got the chrome nuts on the top of the rocker cover, unlike the later l24/26/38 etc. Also has a really nice alloy finned mid sump.

After a lot of investigation today it appears the lower ball joints from the 230 are only the same up to mid 1974. After that they change to a larger taper that was used through a wide range of nissans up to mid 80's on the 720 and 330 i think.

Yea thats where i went in the end. A bit more expensive, but the old guy running the parts department actually knew which car i was talking about.

I have the last right side ball joint in australia coming from sydney and the last left hand joint in the nissan japan warehouse!

The other options are: A, Ream out the lower ball joint hole in the stub axle to fit the bigger ball joint, but it will take out too much strength for me to be happy with it.
or B, fit the later 230 or 330 stub axles, but that would require finding them complete with hubs and buying new ball joints all round.

I have also been on the hunt for a new front screen. I havent even had a sniff of anything yet. All the windscreen places i have asked have none in australia, and cant find any overseas! I might have to buy a parts car and hide it from the mrs! haha
