    1980 Corolla SR5 - Eventual jack of all trades

    So, figured I would post my main project here just to show and get the inevidable advice

    My main project is my 1980 Corolla hatchback. The first one I ever owned was suppose to be a temp car till I could find a car I wanted. I liked the body but that was about it. Ended up loving the car. A year later had to get rid of it and decided I would buy one later when I could learn how to work on it and have a place for it.

    Well, the time came to buy another one in 2005 or 06. Found one in Wyoming for under 500 with a mostly straight body and almost no rust. Drove up, test drove it and bought it. The car made the drive back to SLC with a shot carb and stuck caliper.

    Taken from my 3tcgarage thread. This was right after getting my house in July of 2009 and the only stuff that had been done is taking things apart.

    So, I have had this car for years and bought it only as a project......so no need to rush. After buying her she has mostly sat until the last year where I have been taking things apart and gathering parts. I have acquired almost everything needed to have her running with EFI and edis. Just need new injectors and to quit being afraid of breaking something. She will be running a MS for fuel and spark. I have started running 3/8's fuel line and have a Walbro to supply it when I get her running.

    The overall plan is to get her running NA and learn how to tune. When that is done I will get a turbo and exhaust and tune that. All will be done on the original motor. I hope to get the tuning down well enough before blowing the motor Once the engine blows, or figure I have a good hang on the tuning, I will be rebuilding the motor and stripping the whole car down. Figure I want to have fun with her running before taking her back down.

    More pics of progress I had made setting up EFI, alt upgrade, etc.

    The exhaust about to be cleaned up a little after having the o2 bung welded on.


    Modifying the alt bracket.


    The furthest I can move the alt in now.


    Belt on. Plus I had finished the wiring for the alt at this point.

    Copied from my 3tcgarage build thread. June 10, 2010.

    So, the car idles reasonably well considering what tuning experience I have (none).

    Current things to immediately address:
    Clean up and reassemble my AE strut towers (getting new pads and calipers for fathers day ). Followed by install.
    Figure out why tuner studio shows obscenely high (lean) numbers. With power applied it shows weird reads in studio as well.
    Fix the plumbing from my fuel tank so I can properly install the tank.
    Figure out why my oil gauge appears to show no pressure.

    So, here are the pics of how her motor sits. I realized after trying to route my wires that I really screwed up my wiring. It could have been so much better. Oh well, I will address it when I blow up the motor or tranny (which ever comes first).

    Interior setup. Still needs cleaned up.


    Battery location with temp battery. When I get her to a driving state I will get a dry cell.


    Overall.


    Relay box location. Not concerned with it be exposed to potential elements cause the car will only see good weather


    FPR.


    EDIS. The coil will be replaced by the coil setup off of a tercel. Prefer the cleaner look as seen in Sunray's pics.


    Trigger wheel and sensor.


    Second fuel filter and temp resting place for wires.


    Coolant sensor.


    AE stuff disassembled.

    So, my immediate goals are as follows:

    Install the new gas tank.

    Reconnect the Megasquirt.

    Troubleshoot my wideband cause of jack up readings.

    Learn more about Megasquirt.

    Repair/Replace my door panels while adding 6.5 speaker rings.

    Install the new carpet I ordered. Molded, padded and all the good stuff.

    Decide if I am going to try and reupholster my back seats, or get back seats out of a different vehicle and make them fit.

    Install my 86 Supra seats.

    Looks like a good start duder. Be careful with those MS they can be tricky.

    Yea. I did get her running with the MS, but it was sheer luck since the MS will give you a good basic map. It started cause of that, not cause of my knowledge lol.

    Current status:
    I have the driver side bolted down and the passenger seat needs a couple more tweaks.
    Started figuring out wiring routes for the front door speakers I will install.
    Started messing with fiberglass to reinforce the old door panels.
    Cleaned/torched my o2 sensor in hopes that it fixes it's weird behavior.
    Installed my modified gas tank.
    Tweaked my trigger sensor bracket to have the sensor closer to the trigger wheel.

    Things to do:
    Finish passenger seat.
    Make holding bracket for the LC-1.
    Finish door panels with speaker rings.
    Install new gauges.

    Current pics of the car and little pieces.

    Well, she finally moved out of the garage today under her own power. Still haven't installed my radiator fan, so I didn't let her run too much. That and I screwed up the soldering on my relay box so she didn't always want to start. Found out it is the main power relay socket, so one more thing to address.

    Proof that she left the garage today lol.
